Timothy's Story

Life As the 4 years at Brother Rice drew to a close, I knew I was going to go to college, but didn't know what I wanted to do. As I recall, I was accepted by the Univ. of Chicago (my father, Tom, had went to the Graduate School of Bus. program in the mid 80's, which, besides my good grades and a decent class rank, probably helped my being accepted there) but was rejected by Georgetown. (I really had an interest in politics and public policy, and became a voracious reader of National Review, et al, in high school, and thought applying there would be appropriate. But, naive child, I made the mistake, when I got to the interview phase, of discussing my "conservative credentials" with an interviewer who was probably pretty liberal, I'm guessing. Duh!) As it turned out, since I have been a very thrifty individual from time immemorial, and my comfortably well off parents weren't going to help out in the more expensive colleges (the real "burn" being that those colleges look at your PARENTS' net worth and income in determining whether to give you grants vs. loans, even if you yourself are virtually penniless!), the notion, to me, of piling on tens of thousands of debt "right out of the starting gate" [grin] just did not suit me. So I ended up going to the ever-blessed Moraine Valley Community College for two years (great, because it was free if you simply graduated in the top 10% of your class back then). Then, for the last two years, I transferred to DePaul University. There, I got a bachelor's degree in accounting, and started work for the National Credit Union Administration (the federal agency that regulates--and insures the deposits of --credit unions). Upon taking the job in 1990, I moved out of my parents' house in Orland (which, at that time--and certainly when we moved there in '81!--was in the "boondocks", a mile and a half west of Carl Sandburg HS) to a small apartment in Lansing, IL...on the Indiana border. (The guy that trained me for the credit...Expand for more
union job lived in Schererville, and I thought it would be useful to move closer to him, since I'd be seeing him...and working mainly in NW Indiana-based credit unions...for a good 6 months.) In 1992, doing rather well in my "side job" of investing in the stock market, I decided to look for a house, and fell in love with LaPorte Indiana. Gorgeous historic houses, priced right, with LOW property taxes. I bought the house I am currently in for $52,000 in '92 (3 bedroom, 1500 sq. ft.) and haven't looked back. I just love this place, and everything it represents. Great park system. A bunch of lakes. Improving downtown historic core. Spectacular collection of period historic houses, said to be one of the finest, in terms of variety, in the state of Indiana. It continues to amaze me why more Chicagoans don't find out "the little secret" here. Anyway, I left the credit union job in 1992, shortly after moving to LaPorte, and pretty much have been a "professional investor," here in LaPorte, since then. In Nov. 2003, I ran for city council here, and was elected with a "spooky" 666 votes, handily defeating the incumbent Coucilman's 477 vote total. I am now half-way through a 4 year term, and I can't tell you what a tremendous honor it is to serve fellow citizens of "the place one calls home." Still single, never married, I don't know whether to think of myself as "most eligible," or a dinosaur! [grin] Still playing the piano (I took piano lessens for 13 years as a kid), and recently acquired a 7 foot 1929 Steinert (NOT Steinway) grand piano. When I was in my mid to late teens, I thought I wanted to be president of the United States, but right now, I am just content with the friends I've made in LaPorte, the home I've made it, and the life I've built here. I could say a lot more, and maybe I'll update this profile in the future, but I'm out of characters. Suffice it to say, I cherish the days of my youth, but ESPECIALLY 7th and 8th grade at St. Al's.
