Kevin's Story

Life Hi, this is Kevin Howlett, coming to you live from Room 102B in East BEQ, building 2209. My life has changed a lot since high school, I've changed a lot since high school (my SLHS chums might attest to this fact more than my NPHS friends will). I hated high school, especially SLHS, North Platte was much better when I got used to it. These days I work on the USS ALABAMA (SSBN 731), an Ohio-class fleet ballistic missile submarine stationed on the West Coast, near Puget Sound. I love it up here. My band friends might be interested to know that while I don't play very much anymore, I still compose all the time, pretty much non-stop on the weekends. My little brother goes to UNC, my older brother...well, let's not get into him, and my sister and brother-in-law live in Northglenn and they're doing well! Right now I'm working on a web site, still have to put up some pictures to make it a little interesting, but when I have it up to a good start I'll put the address up here. Take care, and e-mail me if you know me! I want to hear from you, that's why I'm at this site! ROLL TIDE!!! School Thank god for band in SLHS, that's all I'm going to say. That was pretty much the only place I felt that I fit in, and even then I only fit in at certain times. It was a little frustrating. When I moved to North Platte, things were really different--everyone in band over there hated me because I had talent. I know this sounds incredibly pompous, but I'm only telling you this because it's what I heard from a lot of people there. Kind of funny, since that's probably the only reason in SLHS I had friends at all. Oh well. After a little while I got used to it, and branched out into other areas I didn't know I had...Expand for more
any skills in, and I certainly wouldn't have found out in SLHS that I had these skills: acting and singing. I only participated in choir and drama my last year of high school but I impressed just about everyone with my abilities; my first play I only had a few lines, but our last play, a musical (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum) I got a pretty decent role (Miles Gloriosus) and sang two songs ("Bring Me My Bride" and the "Funeral") We made a videotape of it, but our crew guy was so technically inept that it had no sound. So I have my own recording of the silent movie I was in. On the band side of things, I was getting opportunities I would have never had in Colorado. I was accepted for three honor bands as a junior and five as a senior, including All-State Band. I was seriously considering auditioning for voice for All-State (you can do only one or the other) because a lot of people were telling me I'd make it but I decided to go with Clarinet. Good thing, because I ended up getting a cold and I lost my voice. I also lost it in the spring of 2000 when I walked home one night in the rain and got pneumonia. I couldn't even talk for two weeks, I was so sick. One particularly bad day during my recovery, I coughed and didn't stop for an hour. I was torn up, let me tell you. Because I had screwed around so much in high school (it took me five years to graduate) there was no college that would touch me even though I got a 28 on the ACT, which isn't too bad when you consider that I suck at math. So my dad, who'd been in the Navy, suggested that I talk to a recruiter and see what kind of jobs I could pull down in the Navy. Which takes me pretty much to where I am now. Military ROLL TIDE!
