Rachel's Story

Life Greetings Classes of 1987 and 1991! After high school, I went to college in Springfield, MO at Drury College (Now Drury University). I got my bachelors degree in Communications in 1991. After college, I went to work as a copy editor for the Northwest Arkansas Morning News in Rogers, AR. This paper merged with its sister paper in Springdale, AR and became what is known today as The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas (the 2nd largest paper in Arkansas). I worked for the paper as a copy editor and an entertainment editor for 6 years. Then I got a wild hair and decided I wanted to do something else. So, I moved to the Washington, D.C. area and went to work for a telecommunications company called Winstar as a marketing coordinator. Then I moved to Denver, CO so I could work in the field for the same company. Bascially what I did is project manage the company's network buildout in Colorado. However, I got laid off in April 2001. I worked for four months doing screener security at Denver International Airport. Now I'm back in Arkansas, single and working as a writer/editor for General Physics Corp. at the Pine Bluff Arsenal. I do the arsenal's post newspaper. I have been a few places and seen a few things...but there is much more that I want to do. I am also a proud aunt -- Parker Scott Lloyd is 3 now. He is the son of my sister, Suzy (Newton) Lloyd. School I always enjoyed being in band and working on the school yearbook and newspaper. I wouldn't do high school over again because I really didn't enjoy it all that much. I hated math but I loved English, Journalism, Creative Writing and Science. I was pretty well liked but I wasn't overly popular. I still keep in contact with a few friends from high school, but most I believe have left the Pine Bluff area. College College was the best time of my life. I met some great people at Drury College in Springfie...Expand for more
ld, MO and could not have gotten a better education. I still keep in touch with several of my college buddies. They live all over the United States and are doing a wide variety of things now. One is a minister, doctors, nurses, teachers and business people. I was involved in many things while at Drury. I worked in several editor positions on the Drury Mirror, the college newspaper, and participated in several music programs, including jazz band. Our band even went to Disney World in Florida when I was a senior. I was also involved in political, environmental and religious activities on campus. One of the best things I did while in college was work as a Congressional intern in Washington, D.C. the summer before my senior year. It was truly a great experience - one I will never forget. I think the best thing about my college experience is that I was able to come out of my shyness shell and be who I am today. I miss all my friends from Drury and am hoping to come to the next reunion. Workplace I have many jobs throughout my life. Some were cool, some weren't. I have to say that I have had some very unusual jobs throughout my career too. I have worked at a grocery store, a Hallmark store, as an editor for a newspaper, a security screener at a major airport, in the telecom industry and for a steel company. I think all of my work experiences have made me a better co-worker and person in general. They have broadened my scope on life and allowed me to travel a bit. I have enjoyed all my jobs but none has brought me greater rewards than writing. Getting to do it for the U.S. Army makes the rewards all the better. I love being a public affairs officer. Working as an editor/writer allows my creative juices to flow..something I'm truly greatful for. It is always a blessing to be able to work in a field you have a passion for. I think that makes a big difference.
