Dave's Story
Life
A native of Kirkwood, MO, I graduated from Parks Air College of St. Louis U on July 27 1954 with a BS in Aeronautics, and a commission as 2/Lt. in the Air Force Reserve. After graduation, I worked as a Jet Engine Technical Representative at Westinghouse Jet Engine Division in Kansas City, MO. Entering the Air Force in October '54, I received my Navigators Wings at Ellington AFB, TX in October, '55. I completed Advanced Navigation, Bombing, Radar and Nuclear Weapons school at Mather AFB, in May '56. Completing B-47 Combat Crew training at McConnell AFB, KS, I was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) 4th Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron at Lockbourne AFB, OH. I flew as a combat ready photo-navigator in RB-47E's until I left active duty in October of 1957.
Judy (Judy Berger-Coyle '53) and I were married at St. Peters Church, Kirkwood, MO on July 20, 1957.
I was hired by North American Aviation, Columbus OH Division, as flight-test Engineer to demonstrate the Bomb/Nav system for the-then under development-Navy A3J Vigilante carrier attack bomber. Bored with civilian life, I successfully applied for recall to active duty, and returned to my old squadron at Lockbourne, (now 353rd Bomb Squadron and transitioned to the electronic countermeasures role). I served as Lead Bomb/Nav. and instructor in EB-47E's until the wing stood down in June 1964. I completed Squadron Officers School-Maxwell AFB in 1961. I was number eight in the Wing top ten Navigators the last two years at Lockbourne.
Judy , two children - David '61and Claire '63 - and I moved to Eglin AFB, FL in June '64. I was assigned to Air Force Systems Command as a Range Safety Officer (RSO) for weapons tests conducted at the Air Proving Ground. Accepted by the Air University, we moved to Patrick AFB, FL in January '66 for a 1-year course in Missile Range Technology. Graduating in December '66, I was assigned to the Eastern Test Range, Cape Canaveral, FL. I served as an RSO for all major missile launches from the C...Expand for more
ape Area. My 15 (10) minutes of fame came in November '67 when I was the primary RSO "on the Switches" for the first Saturn 5 unmanned missile launch. ABC's Jules Bergman wanted an interview, but the Range Commander and I declined. I left active duty in June '68, and Judy, 3-children (+Jane '66) and I moved to NASA Houston, TX.
I was a mission flight controller on Apollo's 8, 10, 11, 13, and 14. I then moved to the Earth Resources Program as Project Engineer for one Aircraft and two Helicopters. I was selected as Flight Test Project Engineer for the development and testing of the 747-Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) in 1974. 1977 was a dream year when I went to Edwards AFB, CA for the SCA and Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Flight Test Program. Judy and 3-children joined me for the summer in a ski cabin in Wrightwood, CA. We had a wonderful time and saw the first test launch of the Shuttle Enterprise from the back of the 747-SCA.
I returned to NASA Houston and spent the last 12 years at Aircraft Operations, Ellington Field TX -- yes, the same place I got my Navigator wings in 1955. I was Senior Project Engineer on the Super Guppy aircraft and SCA. I was also responsible for all NASA facilities development at Ellington and the remote site for Shuttle Training Aircraft at El Paso, TX until I retired from NASA on Nov 30, 1990.
I worked for a short time as Senior Engineer, distributed systems-Space Station, Loral AeroSys. I finished my career as an aerospace consultant with Grumman Technical Services. I am still available, but no one seems to want to "insult" with me.
Judy and I were avid Country-Western 2-stepers and line dancers.
LIfe as we knew it and loved it ended on 1 Jan 2006 when our dance hall closed for sale. 3 days later Judy was diagnosed with breast cancer. She survived 3 cancer surgeries and 14 months of Chemo. She also developed a number of chronic problems.
My beloved Judy died Nov. 27th - 2-days after Thanksgiving 2010. I miss her every moment of my life.
