Donna's Story

Hello to everyone, wishing you and your family a wonderful, peaceful, healthy 2008. Having just celebrated another birthday, each year reminds me of how fortunate I am to be surrounded by a loving husband, daughter, family and incredible friends. This year we celebrate our 20th anniversary!!!!! Hard to believe that my husband still enjoys my company and continues to make me feel like the prettiest women in the world. Our daughter remains the light of our life, she will soon be "14", YIKES!!!!! She often reminds me that next year she will qualify for her learners permit. I fear she will drive like I did and will need to wait a few extra years to officially get behind the wheel. My personal favorite sport is tennis, which I took up when our daughter turned 8. I spent our daughters first eight years being a full time mother. Being her faithful school volunteer, PA President and even sat on the board of her private school. One day, I had lunch with a wonderful friend who handed me a gift of napkins that read "Stop me before I volunteer again". That's all it took a pack of 50-cent napkins to wake me up from my volunteer coma! Before our daughter was born Russell and I often played golf and I really missed this. Knowing golf takes a long time and is mainly played on the weekends, I decided to take up tennis. For years and since Meg was three I would go to our club and watch her take tennis clinics, lessons and league play. It was when she turned 8 the light bulb shined bright and I looked around and noticed that once again I w...Expand for more
as volunteering for her tennis team. How was it possible that out of 10-15 girls and boys I was the one the pro's and or director asked to volunteer and be the team mom. I rarely had the company of other moms sitting around watching their kids play but I recall meeting a nanny or two. I became aware of a pattern where the kids were quickly dropped off by their mothers who were dressed for tennis too! They would quickly move to another court far away from their children to enjoy a round robin or cardio tennis. At that point I decided, why shouldn't I dabble in tennis and have fun too! My Colossal, Wonderful Mistake!!!! Tennis became my new extreme passion and a large part of my life. Through tennis, I've met so many incredible women and wonderful families. Lesson learned: You can learn a new sport after "40" make new friends and with a little hard work you can actually be pretty good. Last summer, I had to give up Singles tennis, my joints were taking a terrible beating. Now, I continue to enjoy my ladies doubles tennis team that I captain. I am mindful of how incredibly blessed I am and to not take things for granted and never to serious. We still enjoy traveling and go to Hilton Head Island, SC. We have two rental investment properties that I manage myself. Every year I meet so many clients and the majority are from Ohio!!! If you enjoy Hilton Head and are interested in renting please visit my vrbo owner # 32615 , I will extend a discount for the class of 1979. Wishing everyone a blessed day! Donna (McGonigle) Harris
