Darlene's Story

Life Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think my life would travel the route that it has; I often think back to how bored I was during my year in French class--couldn't think of one good reason to pay attention, because I really didn't plan to venture far from Detroit. Well, I did leave Detroit! Lived in Georgia, Germany, North Carolina, Georgia again, and North Carolina again! While in Germany, I visited London, Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg, and, you guessed it, (the fringes of) Paris! Although I came to regret not having paid attention in French class, I did much better in German class--not fluent, but able to communicate, understand, and survive.... One marriage. No children. Still "working" on the next great American novel! School Started school at Alger Elementary, then transferred to Pattengill Elementary to start third grade; from there, to Webber JHS. Atended Highland Park High School, during 10th grade, because we were living in Highland Park; moved back into Detroit City limits and transferred to Cass Tech (Business Curriculum)to finish HS. College Some events in life don't follow a straight line! After graduating from Cass Tech, I worked full-time and started classes at Wayne State--unfortunately, that didn't last long because it was also time for "Miss Independent" to party! While in Germany, I earned my Management Certification from City Colleges of Chicago. It took a couple of years before I was finally able to realize my dream of earning a degree in Psychology (from Georgia College; Milledgeville, GA). After another relocation, I entered Fayetteville State University (Fayetteville, NC) to pursue a Masters' in Psychology; unfortunately, after being hospitalized for a life-changing illness, my priorities changed and I chose not to return to FSU. I continue to earn CEU's from work-related training AND I ...Expand for more
continue to take self-enhancement courses at the local community college--need anything upholstered? Beware, plumbing or electrical training may be next! Workplace I started working, at Blue Cross-Blue Shield, in the 11th grade, as part of the Work-Study program at Cass Tech. I continued working at Blue Cross-Blue Shield, after graduation. When I moved to Georgia, in '73, I worked at Blue Cross-Blue Shield in Atlanta. While living in Germany ('75-'78), I was employed by the Department of Defense School System. When I returned to Georgia, I worked for the State of Georgia, at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, GA. Central State's claim to fame is that it is one of the country's oldest, and, at one time, one of the country's largest psychiatric facilities. Let me clarify--I really was an employee and NOT a resident, although some days it was kind of tough to figure out who were the workers and who were the patients/residents! Now in North Carolina, I have been employed by the county (in which I live) for the past nineteen years (my longest time on any job). I work at the county Department of Social Services--spent over ten years coordinating in-home services to the elderly; at this time, I function as a Crisis Intake Social Worker--seeing individuals in need of assistance with obtaining medications, avoiding evictions, avoiding utility cut-offs, and just about anything else in between! Some days are more hectic than others, but the work remains a challenge. Must admit, though, that I now spend A LOT OF TIME thinking about retirement! All in all, I've enjoyed my time in the workforce. Military As you can tell by my Military Profile, my connection to the military was that of a military spouse. I do not mean to offend anyone who has served this country on active duty, but, trust me, military spouses are, indeed, MILITARY!
