Beverly's Story

Beverly (Qualls) Kalageorgi: A synopsis of the past 50+ years: After attending Grade, Junior and High school at what is now Belleville High School until 1960, I moved to Indiana for a year and a half and graduated from Wendell L. Wilkie H.S. in Elwood 1961. Our family moved back to Michigan (Livonia) shortly thereafter. My brother, Ken (class of '63) graduated in Livonia. My sister, Dawn, who is 7 year younger than I, finished school there, as well. Initially, I became a Beautician and opened Beverly Joyce Salon in Livonia (Ann Arbor Trail & Wayne Rd.) The shop was in operation for 17 years. I married and became the mother of Leanne in 1965 and Steven in 1970. In my second life, I divorced, moved to Shelby Twp. and became a Registered Nurse. I then worked in a variety of areas in Nursing, including Oncology, Home Care Management, Cardiac, etc. I also worked for a couple of years for 4 pools and was able to build experience by working in a number of hospitals in the Detroit area. I value that time and opportunity. During this time I also became a photographer. I particularly enjoyed working as House Photographer at a famous night club, The Premier Center, in the Detroit area, where I met and photographed several famous entertainers including Frank Sinatra, Wayne Newton, Paul Anka, Bob Hope and many others. I have a wonderful collection of my prints signed personally by many of the artists! I also have a presentation of my photographs taken in Russia. These works have been on display in both Russia and the USA. In my third existence, I met my husband of nearly 23 years, Leo, while caring for his mother who was dying of cancer. It is a long and touching story which led me to believe that there is a purpose in everything and that there are no accidents or coincidences. We share the same birthday, likes, hobbies and dislikes. We have a fantastic life together. We love to travel and have been all over the world. Leo has two boys from a previous marriage and our 'joint venture' is our 20-year-old daughter, Kyra! Leo is Russian by heritage, a direct descendant of Catherine the Great, was born in China, left there during the Japanese invasion when he was 18, immigrated to Hong Kong and then Brazil and was then found by GM and sent to GMI. He graduated from GMI and was employed by G.M. Overseas for 50 years until he retired a few years ago. He has lived all over the world for G.M. and I had the wonderful opportunity to share in one of these adventures when we accepted an assignment to Russia in 1991. We arrived in Togliatti, Russia (a city of about 800,000 people - 1000 kilometers E. and So. of Moscow) just 2 weeks prior to the initial coup attempt. We were the only Americans there. What was intended to be a 3-year assignment evolved into a fascinating 8-year experience. During that time I learned the Russian language (Leo speaks 4 languages and I now speak 2), started TRACC (Togliatti Russian-American Cultural Center and English Library), Camp Russia-America (a summer language/cross-cultural camp for 100 kids which was held for 6 years, a pen-pal organization of over 1000 students and teachers, an Estee Lauder store and was involved in many of the initial movements toward assisting Russia in her transition to a free economy. I also taught a class which I created called Conversational American English - (English as a reflection of the American culture). I taught the class for 4 years at a prestigious university in Togliatti to language students who had already mastered a base of the English language through British books, tapes and classes, hoped to do international business some day, but hadn't a clue about the vast differences between British English and culture and American English and culture. I remain involved in cross-cultural education and with efforts in Russia, and occasionally speak...Expand for more
at schools, to groups, etc. on the subject. This present life finds me enjoying retired life after 25 years of Nursing. Leo & I still live in Rochester Hills, MI and keep busy with some travel, 8 grandkidlets and Kyra, who is finishing a 2 year college and preparing to transfer to Michigan State University to study Language & Art. I attended Oakland University for awhile after returning from Russia - working (very slowly) on completing my BSN and another degree in Russian and cross-culture. I was the president of the Russian Club at O.U. I am considering more classes, but may find another major that interests me, as I most likely will not return to the field of Nursing. Daughter Kyra, who still lives at home, reached a Brown Belt in Karate at one time and is thinking of returning, likes to swim, plays guitar, is a talented artist and speaks fluent Russian (without an accent - since she was raised in Russia and attended Russian schools until 5th grade). Daughter, Leanne, works in Rochester at Mercedes Benz, is remarried and has 14 year old twins (Kelley & Kelsey). Her husband is an RN and has four children from a previous marriage ¿ (Emily, 19, AnnDrue, 16, Matthew & Madison, 13). Son Steven, his wife Shanan, daughter Krystal (13) and son Steven (17) live in Lake Orion. He is a computer whiz and manages G.M.s account for EDS. He also teaches computer classes at various universities. His degree is in Information Systems and Shanan is an RN working in ICU. Son Igor is a graduate of Wharton and Chicago U., is President of Kamkin Books in D.C. Son, Andre, a former rock n' roller ( Guns 'N Roses) is now living and working in Paris. The rest of the family: My parents, Ken and Betty Qualls: Lived in Livonia for many years after moving back from Indiana. They then retired to Houghton Lake, Michigan, where they spent 20 years or so. Mom graduated from Belleville High School as Elizabeth Whichello with the Class of ¿37. Sadly she passed away two years ago. They had been married for 65 years! Dad lives nearby in a Senior Apartment in Auburn Hills, is in good health and does a bit of traveling. Sister, Dawn, married to Sam, is now living and working for the educational system in Surprise, AZ. They have two children. Their daughter Kendra, who graduated from Detroit Mercy and is married, with an adorable two year old son, Will, also now lives in Surprise and is teaching at a Montessori school. Their son, Sam, is a disc-jockey on a popular Detroit radio station. Brother, Ken Qualls, has had a long, very successful and interesting career. Following graduation, he joined the Air Force Band of the West, performing as Drum Major and for parades and several of the famous BBQs held by President Johnson at his Texas ranch. Ken then became a pilot, working for Flight Safety Organization and, for several years, as Chief Pilot for 20th Century Fox, flying many directors and actors. During this time he appeared on several episodes of M*A*S*H. He left that position to fly as Chief Pilot for the Prime Minister of Kuwait - where he was employed during the airport bombing there. He flew Van Cliburn on his European tour, and then worked as a pilot for China Air. He has flown several presidents. For awhile he flew for the Miami Dolphins. Most recently he worked as Julio Iglasias' private pilot and Benny Hinn. He now owns an air company and he and wife, Christiane, also work in real estate in Boca Raton. He has two boys from a previous marriage. Kevin, who works in Advertising and lives in Maine and Scott, a ¿surfer dude¿ who lives in Hawaii and owns a company which grows gorgeous Hawaiian flowers to export. I feel fortunate to have kept contact with many classmates from Elwood and have enjoyed during the past few years connecting with long-lost childhood friends from Belleville!! Would love to hear from you!
