Bruce's Story

Life I retired from Inland in Feb. 2002 and immediately relocated to Chandler, Az. with my wife Bev (nee Foster, a 65 Tech grad}. The weather is great here but if I could afford it Sedona is where I would be. Beautiful up there. Bev and I have 5 grown children (can they be grown and children?} between us. Two out here and the other 3 back in the da region. Only 1 grandchild though. I must admit I have adapted to retirement quite well. My brother-in-law and I usually manage to get out on the golf course a couple times a week (where I display erratic skills) and I have perfected the art of 'putzing about' the rest of the time. Bev is a nurse and works 2 nights a week in pediatrics at Chandler Hospital (I faithfully pack her lunch). I have no grass to mow but alot of plants all over the yard that always seem to need trimming (if I could figure out how to properly program the drip system it would probably be even worse). All in all, being, shall we say, not an overly ambitious creature by nature, my transition from the work force to retirement went quite smoothly. Now, instead of taking, at times somewhat complicated fabrications (old man Fuller would have been proud)from blue prints to steel plate I wield a swiffer stick. I'm a natural. Yes siree, I was born to swiffer. I never have and don't now carry a cell phone. And no, it's not because I'm cheap (honest). And no, it's not because I think I'm too important to be bothered or anything like that, I just don't like being that accessible. Bev has one. In case something should happen while she is out I want her to be able to get a hold of me (if I'm home). Hey, I lived in Indiana for 52 years without a snowblower I guess I can survive without a cell phone. Oh....let's see...what else. I was in the Navy from 1968-1972. I could have gone to Boot Camp in Orlando but I opted for Great Lakes. Where I froze my butt off (what was I! thinking?). I went to "A" School in Bainbridge Md. where I learned to field strip a typewriter and find out what to do with the pink and green copies of a letter (Top Secret stuff). Then it was off to Adak Island Alaska. A remote outpost in the Aleutians, 1200 miles from anywhere. Spent a long year there. It was beautiful and pristine but come on....a year? While there me and a couple co-workers decided to earn some extra cash working on a crab factory ship on the weekends. Went out there on a Saturday and worked all day filling up an entire refrigerated hold with 40lb cases of crab meat from floor to ceiling. Never went back. The last 2 and half years I was stationed in San Diego (loved that town). There I was engaged in a never ending, day to day, life threatening battle with hallucinating flower children. (It wasn't pretty). Thru 1991 to 1998 I was the head varsity softball coach at Griffith High School. It was an extremely rewarding experience and I had some great kids play for me. Parents? Another story. (Actually they were okay for the most part). I gave it up after 8 years due to major burnout. Working in the mill and coaching took its toll. Up to now you are probably thinking, wow! Turner is like 'perfect'. Wrong! I'm sooooo not! Fact is, I'm an addict. I'd never had much sympathy for addicts. Looked upon it as a character flaw, a moral weakness. Not anymore. Now I know it can happen to anyone, even me.What is my addiction? Alcohol? No. Sex? No such luck. Painkillers? Uh-uh. Cocaine? Nope. Crack? Nah. Meth? Oh please. It's Wheat Thins! There, I've said it. What a relieve. I feel a great burden has been removed from my shoulders. And it's not any of the lame flavored variety. Original Wheat Thins only for me. ng, until 7,8 months ago I can't remember even eating a wheat thin. Never gave them a thought. Now I can't get enough of them. There are days I can go through an entire box (the 10.5 oz. not the 16 oz.) Bev thinks I need help but I believe I can kick this on my own. We'll see. Fond Memory Fragments: Seems we always had snow at Xmas, Irving School fall carnival (what a blast), Swimming at Douglas Park, Trying to sneak into the pool at Koczu? Kosckie? Kucsh? oh, that park in E.C., I.C.E. dances at Irving, Acappella singing with the guys in the park (I'm sure we were great), Wolf Lake, Fire works at Whiting Beach, The Roller Dome, Those sappy blue paper coupons for even sappier circus at the Civic Center, B.A.B., Bobby Beach, Hill 99, The Cudahay Ghost, That old dirty gray bearded guy under the E.C. Bridge, Bus trips (Riverview, Dunes), The #2 Bus, Summer carnival by Koshusko, Kuscushio, Kuskiesc? oh, that park in E.C., DeLocks, Edmar, The Igloo, Goldblatt's, Minas', Millikins, The Pathenon, Paramount and Caramel Corn place next to it, Woodmar, Gentry's, The Kettle (not my hangout), Chat & Chew (There neither), Sledding down Irving Park side of Toll Road, Drinking beer and watching Noll football in tall grass on other side of Toll Road, Riding in trunk to get in 41 drive-in, Dear lost friends (Ma, Dennis, Ray), Mr. Welty Day, More later. Sadly, must add Kenny Anderson to lost Dear Friends list...bummer. Outside of adding Ken it has been some time since I've updated things a bit. For one thing we now are the proud grandparents of 4. Three boys and one girl. Sophie and Liam are our son's children in Chicago and Our daughter Vicki had another boy Noah reside in Hessville. The prospects of further additions are slim at best. Last Saturday Bev and I met an old fellow regionite for lunch at Tommy Bahama's in Scottsdale. It was none other than Christina Derejko! We spent a pleasant couple hours over wine (Chris had diet coke?) bringing one another up to date. I must admit I was surprised at Christina's family history. It is quite an amazing story. Last spring I met a former coworker and some Hessville friends of his at a golf course here in Chandler. To my surprise two of the members of their group were Wayne Hargrove and Jerry Strempka. Can you believe it? Fellow region rats, right here in Arizona. If I was a typical Arizona gun toting idiot I would have emptied my chamber in celebration (in self-defense mind you). The last two summers Bev and I have been renting a house on Cedar Lake. Yes, that Cedar Lake. This coming August we will be there for 3 weeks. The house is located right on the lake with a 40' pier. At night, after several white russians and the moon shining brightly it could be Tahoe as far as we are concerned. Keep your comments to yourself if you will, we love it. It is perfectly located so we can visit family and friends, dine at the Light House, play golf and retire for the night at our own place. Have I mentioned that I kinda like retirement? Other than Cedar Lake, Bev and I have taken a few other trips. For our 25th we went back to Hawaii. This time Maui. I played the Plantation Course and had a cheesburger in Paradise. Also we spent 8 days in Bermuda. A dream vacation. But beware, riding a jet ski on the ocean is like riding a mechanical bull, beats the crap out of you. This past September we went to Mrytle Beach for a week. We had a condo right on the beach. I must confess. I am not much of an ocean person. Too many creatures beneath the surface. I love being by the water but don't wish to become shark bait. I spent most days golfing and sucking down alcohol from the shore. More later.
