Anastasia's Story

Life I was born to married teenage hippies on October 4 (I'm not telling you the YEAR!). My dad split before my brother Jason was born. My mom cleaned up, got her GED, went to college, worked full time, and raised two kids on her own. We started out in Oklahoma City, but moved to Nashville when I was 9. We came back a year and a half later. We moved into a sector of OKC that was technically MWC schools, but after a bad experience at Jarman I elected to transfer to Kerr. That year was brilliant- more on that later. I went ahead and attended Del City (just like my mom and her siblings). It was typical high school- awkward, embarrassing, difficult, and utterly necessary. After I graduated in 1994, I started out at UCO. I lasted a year. I kinda drifted around after that, until my mom insisted I come back home and go back to school. My last two years at home with my family were great- a gift from God. My mom died in December of 1997. That was my biggest challenge- learning to go on without the one person who loved me most. But I did. And I will continue to. School I kinda bounced around from school to school. I started out at Willow Brook, in OKC. Then the family moved to Nashville where I attended 2 schools- Gower and Percy Priest Elem. We moved back to OKC just in time for me to start 5th grade. My brother and I attended Eastside in MWC, the moved on to Jarman. I won't go into detail- let's just say I was a big enough freak to get picked on. After one particularly nasty incident I transferred to Kerr for the 9th grade. That year was excellent. My teachers were good, I had friends, and did really well in French. (Mrs. Larsen, the choir/French teacher, is still one of my top 5 favorite teachers of all time!) After that, it only seemed natural to continue to Del City HS. It was... well, it was high school. Nobody knew that I had ADHD or undiagnosed bipolar disorder- they just thought I was unmotivated, hyperactive, extremely moody, and very weird. I did take part in a few activites- French Club in 10th, Debate in 11th, and Del Aires and SADD in my senior year. I had a few good friends at DCHS- Jennifer Maddox (who moved to Alabama before my junior year- I still miss her), Beth (last name escapes me- fabulous, gorgeous redhead), Matt White. Since high school, I've met with some of my classmates who have felt bad for picking on or shunning me. My advice to you- don't. It's been so long, and we've all grown since then. We have something...Expand for more
in common- we survived high school together. I always wanted to be a veterninarian when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a pretty good idea. As it turns out, they were well-meaning but off on their predictions. I tend to wind down in a variety of ways. I still enjoy reading. My favorite authors are Jane Austen, Neil Gaiman, Douglas Adams, and Dave Barry. I've also really gotten into Guitar Hero and Rock Band. I'm pretty decent up to Medium. And, of course, pretty much anything that involves spending time with my boyfriend is great. Music is one of my passions. Always has been. I'm quite a decent singer, which serves me well as a part time karaoke host for my brother Jason's karaoke business. But I just love listening to music as well. My tastes are eclectic- I like classic jazz, classical music, classic rock, punk rock, old school alt rock, and some country (simply because the lyricism is usually quite clever and realistic). Also, I'm an artist. I enjoy the art of others as well, from the paintings of Mondrian and Picasso to the comic strip 'Pearls Before Swine'. I'm interested in what art expresses, though, not necessarily the stuff that's purely controversial. I've drawn cartoons since my teens, and have recently taken up painting as well. My biggest surprise was the loss of my mother when I was 22. I made the mistake of taking her continued presence in my life for granted; I was not prepared for her sudden illness, nor having to decide to take her off life support. I often wonder what our relationship would be like if she were still alive. And I do miss her, every day. I think the teacher I'd like to see the most.. oh,gosh, tough one. Toss up between Ms. Duffield, 1st Grade, Mr. McClure, 5th grade, and Mrs. Larsen, 9th Grade Chorus/French. I was lucky... For those of you who are still curious, I still have yet to develop a 'conventional' sense of style. It's been described as 'I must let a deranged kindergartener pick my wardrobe'. My one do-over: not take everything so seriously. I was waaaay too sensitive growing up. In 10 years, I hope to be a therapist. I'm going to get there by finishing college, eventually getting my doctorate. What would probably surprise everybody the most at the next reunion is my willingness to party down- sober. I'm a ridiculous amount of fun. Arrested development of just eccentricity? You be the judge. Thanks for reading the novel. Hope I didn't bore you to death. LOL
