Reed's Story

Life The biggest news of the past few years has been my marriage to Donna Corazzini on August 11, 2007 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island! I have three adult children from my previous marriage: Adam, age 29, a state corrections officer and a town firefighter in North Carolina; Colleen, age 25, a grad student in religious archaeology at University College in London, England; and Leigh, age 20, a nanny who lives in Maryland. My avocation is flying airplanes and helicopters, and I fly Donna and myself all over the country for both business and pleasure trips in our small family plane. In 1998 I took two months off and flew a tiny single-engine airplane around the world for fun. A Google search on my name can point you to details on that trip, if you're interested. Fortunately, all of us in my immediate family have so far remained in very good health, although I gain about a pound or two a year like everybody else seems to. I hate that! Lots of bicycling in the summer and ballroom dancing (if you want to call it that!) in the winter, both with my very understanding wife, have helped this couch potato avoid becoming a blimp. . . so far, at least. I look forward to hearing from other alums!!! Workplace After earning a BS in biophysics at Michigan State Univ, I worked in radio broadcasting for a few years, became interested...Expand for more
in business, and thus decided to do an MBA. Finished that at Harvard in 1980. Started in the embryonic biotech industry as a product manager at Millipore Corp (Bedford, MA) during the MBA summer break, and stayed for 4 yrs after graduation, rising to Dir of International Marketing in the Waters Associates sub. Left in 1983 to join the start-up company Promega Biotec (Madison, WI) as VP-Marketing, but left to join Marine Venture Capital (now Bank One Venture Capital) in 1985 (Milwaukee, WI). In 1986 I took my first President/CEO job at what was then a tiny little company called Integrated Ionics, later renamed i-STAT Corp (and still later sold to Abbott Laboratories) in Princeton, NJ. Since then I've had the priviledge to run nine bio-medical companies, and was most recently Chairman and CEO of Virtual Incision Corporation (Lincoln, NE and Waltham, MA) where the company is developing incredible tiny robots that can actually perform surgical procedures entirely inside the body, with no external incisions. Cool stuff! It's been a harried, but really fun career. HOWEVER, for those of you who might think this all sounds very sexy, remember that running tiny little companies means NO PENSION . . . so I'll be at this stuff for a very long time. I'll probably still be at my desk when our reunion committee schedules the 75th reunion!
