Kevin's Story

Life My life has not gone the direction anyone would have thought! After spending 6 years travelling with Up With People and singing throughout the world, I came back to Colorado and went back to school. I earned a degree in Journalism and began my reporting career. I spent time at KKTV, KREX (Grand Jct.), and as a correspondent under the CNN network in the Marriannas Islands (Saipan). I met my wife in college and we married right before leaving for the islands. When that job was completed we returned to No. CO to help care for her mom. Julie was a caseworker for social services, and I entered law school. When I graduated with my JD I worked in Denver Drug Court and then transfered into the juvenile division in Arapahoe County. I have been working with kids in trouble with the law for the past 14 years. I deal with 10-17 yr olds on everything from attempted murder to sex assaults, drugs, etc.. Most of my clients are really good kids with a lot of baggage to overcome. Many I am able to help, and many I'm not. I try to do my best for them, but ultimately they have to do it themselves and some aren't ready yet. On the family side, many of you may have heard about my family. We were on the news quite a bit in 1997. The headlines were something like "Highlands Ranch family now has 6 in diapers". Yes, I am a father, many times over. I have had 7 children over the past 11 years. It's easier to do that when you have a 15yr old adopted son, two 12 year old daughters (1 bio, 1 adopted) and 4 11 year olds....yes that is quadruplets! At the time we had this won...Expand for more
derful suprise the "older" girls had just turned 1...so it was quite a family! The wonder part of this is that I have terrific children. The sad part is that we lost Katie to a bout of pnumonia. The other 3 quads have been very ill..actually are listed in the state of Colorado's sickest 75 kids. (We are numbers 73, 74,75! They are all on oxygen, have feeding tubes, one can't sit or walk and is in a wheelchair, one has a left side that doesn't function as well as the right and so limps and has trouble doing things like catching, writing, etc. He is also blind from the level of his nose down. The medical conditions keep us very busy administering medicines, breathing txs., etc.. Both my wife and I went back to class to get medical licenses to be able to work with them better. No we aren't doctors, but if all the kids in the area become good, I could get a job at the hospital! The kids used to be in the hospital so often it felt like we lived there, but they don't go as often anymore as we have gotten a lot of medical equipment here at home to enable us to evaluate them and treat them. In fact, we've gone to the hospital and found that we have easier and better access to some equipment than the hospital does! Despite all of the problems, all the kids are wonderful, joyful, and a blessing to our hearts. The quads are in 5th grade. Then I have another 6th grader, a seventh, and a 9th. I did get a divorce two years ago and now am a single dad. It's been a good thing for both me and the kids. If you read this and know me, would love to hear from you. Kevin
