Barbara's Story

Life After completing less than a year of studies at the University of Florida, post-graduation from SWHS in 1970, I developed major wanderlust, and began a career as a flight attendant with Delta Air Lines in 1971. I retired reluctantly in 2003, after over 32 years of service with Delta. I say reluctantly, as in 1998, I was diagnosed with a very rare hereditary bleeding disorder, one that requires clotting factor to be infused at least daily. I have Factor 7 (F-VII) deficiency, it's the same as male hemophilia only rarer, and a different blood protein is involved. Infusing clotting medicine, for me, is the easy part, getting past airline security with all of my medical equipment after 9/11 was the difficult part (those needles and syringes constitute potential lethal weapons, you know!) So, I took a leave of absence from Delta after 9/11, until I was eligible for early retirement in Dec. 2003. Those two years really prepared me for the future, as I can honestly say, there aren't enough hours in the day for me now... I'm busier than I've ever been, and wonder how I EVER fit those years of work in! Because of the bleeding disorder, I was unable to have children. God has blessed me with a gazillion nieces and nephews and friends' children, so I definitely have kids in my life. But my husband and I have two four-legged "daughters" that we dote on, Goldie, a 23-year old Standardbred mare, and Maggie, a 3 year-old-totally-rules-our-house Cairn Terrier. We're sort of like grandparents without the grandkids! We live in what has to be the most beautiful part of the entire U.S....the Pacific NW. Go about as far west as you can and not be in Puget Sound, and as far north as you can and not be in Canada, and you'll be at our place. We have a farm, a ranch, whatever you want to call it...lots of acres, and a view of Mt. Baker, and just a stone's throw from Vancouver, B.C. Only one earthquake (biggest on r...Expand for more
ecord, of course) since I've been here, but hey...I'm a Hurricane Expert, right? (Remember Donna and Cleo?!) Two hours north of Seattle. Four miles east of Puget Sound. Truly breathtaking, and not a moment goes by that I don't acknowledge it. I'm really into gardening, and somewhat of an herbalist with over 35 varieties, I even make my own potpourri and herbal teas. Go figure! Those "Mother Earth" years in Boston weren't wasted after all! My husband Jamey is a Captain for Delta, so if you're on a flight, you need to ask if Jamey is in the cockpit, he's the only one with that name. He'll make sure you get a free drink if you mention you know me. But only if you say hi and tell him you remember what a GREAT gal I was! LOL! When not farming, I have a little antique business that is more fun than profitable at this point. I have a consignment booth in a country store, so it's the best of both worlds. The owner has the 9-5 business hassles, and I get the profits!! Not much, but what I do get goes to fund a support group that I started for women with bleeding disorders. It originated in Washington State but has now gone national, and lo and behold, for everyone who has ever chastised me for talking too much, guess what? I am now getting paid to do just that!! I talk to groups who are interested in forming their own chapters of women with bleeding disorders, and help them get started. It's my passion. I'm also co-writing a book about the psychosocial issues that impact women with hemophilia. Should be out in a year. Well, if any of you who are reading this and remember me and want to say hi, I'd be delighted to hear from you. Better yet, stop by. I'm about as far from Miami as you can get and still be on the continent, but we love visitors, and with a little advance notice, will even fluff the comforter on the guest bed! I plan on attending the 35th reunion next July and hope to see alot of you then. God Bless!
