Michael's Story

Wow! Fifty years is a long time to recollect old memories. I'll go with the flow and put down an outline bio for anyone that might want to know what might have happened to one of their classmates. I pictured myself as a shy fish in High School - probably because I 'arrived' in Decatur during my seventh grade years and all of the cliques were already established. After High School I enrolled at Indiana University. During three years at I.U. I emerged from my shell to some extent but still didn't know how to talk to girls! Gads! Those were the awkward days. I did date Shirley Harden for a time but it seemed more friendship than anything else. Sorry to let that cat out of the bag Shirley! After three years at I.U.my Dad, who you might remember owned the Blackstone Bar, had an unexpected 'fire sale' and could no longer afford to subsidize my education at the state "Party School". I went to Tennessee and lived in an upstairs flat with some Good Ol' Southern Boys until I graduated with a B.S. in Biology/Chemistry - I always was and shall remain a Geek.. I then joined the Army during the Viet Nam era. As a Second Lieutenant, Infantry I finally drew a lucky card and was sent to South Korea. After Korea, my newly found leadership skills placed me as HQ Company Commander at Ft Ben Harrison in Indianapolis. Not being a career soldier, and realizing that a 're-up" meant a fast trip to Southeast Asia, I married a young lady - Deborah Love- a Registered Nurse from Ft Wayne and returned to school in Tennessee to complete my Masters. Yes, I finally got over my shyness with the soft and tender members of our species. We left Tennessee with our first child, Michael Andrew, and headed West to Tucson where I finished a PhD in Agronomy and Plant Genetics. From there I joined the USDA as a Research Geneticist in Riverside California. Just prior to our move to California, our daughter, Tara Jeanine was born. It became obvious that I needed to quit collecting degrees in as much as they seemed to be directly and highly correlated with increasing family members! One DHS memory in Tucson was meeting Al Townsend. My folks were visiting and Al was waiting our table in an upscale restaurant that I might never have entered on a graduate student's salary. Al mentioned that Katherine Bisc...Expand for more
hoff was teaching someplace nearby.. I never contacted Katherine and my have misconstrued.some of these ancient facts. Sorry Katherine! In Riverside, we raised our family for about 20 years during which time I worked as a bench scientist and served as Research Leader and then Laboratory Director at the U.S. Salinity Laboratory. It was a great although geeky job but during that time, I had the opportunity to work in many parts of the world (India, Pakistan, Egypt, Israel, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Palestine, and the Philippines). I had the opportunity to visit many more.countries and our family spent an entire year in Victoria, Australia while I worked with their Department of Ag and learned to speak "Strailan. We still have close friends from many of these places. Unfortunately, after 25 years of bench research I went to the Dark Side and became an Administrator. I finished my scientific career with a three-year stint as Associate Director of the Pacific West for the USDA Agricultural Research Service and then served as the National Program Leader for Water Quantity and Quality in Beltsville, Maryland. Its been a wild ride and a career that I could not even have envisioned in High School. My wife is retired from 35 years of nursing and multiple roles of helping a husband through graduate school, and raising a family. Andy is working in Cary, NC and Tara and our two fantastic grandchildren live in Coxsackie NY. My Dad died in 1994, but Mom is well and healthy in Hemet CA. Sister Sharon, Class of 1965, lives in Riverside CA, Brother Shaun, Class of 1968, recently retired from the insurance business in Zionsville, IN. My sIster Maxi lives in Boulder CO. All-in-all, the Decatur Shannon's were good about the 'going forth' but were conservative on the 'multiplying' part. My time now is spent with golf, kayaking, fishing, painting (watercolors and acrylics), bridge and community affairs. This is probably way more than you wanted to know and way more than any of you knew about me in High School. Hopefully, a few of you might be inspired by my catharsis to write a few words about your own lives. Due to previous plans, we are booked for vacation during the reunion and I will miss an event that I have wondered would ever come. Maybe I can make the 75th? Mike Shannon
