Jennie's Story

Until very recently, I was a researcher in the human genetics section of biomedical research at AI duPont Hospital for Children (Nemours), where I had the unique opportunity to combine my linguistics (Penn State) and Biology (U. of Delaware) degrees on projects including the genetics of speech delays and the molecular basis of a form of autism in kids with a duplication of chromosome 15. Naturally I prepared for this position via my previous jobs as a magazine editor, AOL manager, childcare head teacher, and Wal-Mart manager, and ongoing efforts as a self-defense instructor. Truly a boring and one-track career path I have led :). Now I'm a stay at home Mom (and of course continuing in the martial arts), keeping up with 2 very active boys, both bright, loving, and inquisitive, and one with a genetic disorder known as Klinefelter's syndrome, a disorder which affects approximately 1:500 males, making it one of the most common genetic disorders, yet it is very poorly understood by many, particularly in the pediatric community. So we've been on a little adventure together. But with great support particularly from his physical therapists and one great teacher at school, plus his own in...Expand for more
domitable spirit, I'm guessing very few people will ever guess the kid is carrying a spare chromosome. In addition to two great kids and my high school sweetheart husband Toby, I have two cats at home, also guys. My brother just adopted a gorgeous little girl near her third birthday, and having a little girl in the house was like dealing with an alien creature. But I'm sure if I were ever blessed with one I would find a way to adapt. And of course, for those of you who remember me, no year is complete without multiple trips to . . . the farm. Sadly, this year that included multiple trips upstate for funerals, including Toby's grandmother, my Dad, and my sister's husband-- tough summer. I would have been great had my Dad made it to see the Phillies win the World Series! But the rest of my family is still up there and it's wonderful to pass along great memories to my kids and the nieces and nephews, and watch them tramp out in the morning and come home covered in berry juice and apple seeds and all manner of debris and know they had a great time! Okay, this is truly bordering on TMI and it's time to put the kids to bed, so . . . GO PHILLIES!! and of course . . . GO PENN STATE!
