James's Story

Life I've noticed that the Midway crowd seems a bit quiet on here, which is a pity - there's so many good people I've been wanting to get back in touch with, and I think we could all use a good round of conversation. If anyone's interested, toss a line my way. It may take me a bit to reply (gotta love lines for computers), but I WILL reply. School School... from Trinity Lutheran to Midway High School... egads, what images are conjured there! I think back on my time in school and wonder what in the heck I was thinking *LOL*. Of course, can't go back and change it now, so I suppose life will go on regardless ;-). It's been over 10 years since I last set foot in Midway ISD as a student. Time has definitely given the entire experience a new light, and has really put into focus what's truly important. For those of you who's yearbooks I signed... my advice remains the same. ;-) Don't listen to the voices!!!! As to what's new, I've since discovered what most of you who've actually finished college have already found out - it's not nearly as hard as what I originally thought it was... especially compared to Army schools for my particular specialty. At least with college, you can drop a course and not have it affect you much (presuming you're able to afford that choice)... Army schools, however, tend to be a lot less forgiving about trying to 'drop' a course... In any event, I'm now back to looking around at online colleges, which is making life somewhat entertaining once more. Once I finally figure out what I want ...Expand for more
to be when I grow up (gee... at almost 30, you'd think I'd have figured it out by now!), I'll actually be able to pin down a degree plan... but, before I can do any of that, I have to figure out when I can actually take a class. Joy. So, 11 years after finishing with Midway, I have a whopping 1 year's worth of college courses. ;-) Yep... working hard on the procrastination wagon, you could say... Military Now things get interesting... at least, for me! I initially joined to break out of the rut I was in - walking 3 hours across town to get to a minimum wage job, going nowhere in life, etc. Something about getting to see the world, get three hots, a cot, and a roof of one type or another over my head ;-). That was 8 years and one re-enlistment ago, and I've gotta say... given the chance to do it all over again - I'd sign up again in a heartbeat. The big question is if I'll keep it up. Right now, the answer is a resounding YES. As much as the civilian sector seems tempting, the Army has a few major things going for it. First, can't beat 100% tuition assistance. Second, can't beat being PAID to live off base... or simply getting a house on base and not having to pay rent or utilities (hopefully that won't change in the near term!). Third... well... hate to say it, but even though it SUCKS being in a deployed environment, it IS nice to get the increased pay and the chance to visit new and exotic locations. Heck, might even visit a couple of the places I've been once they calm down enough to accept tourists...
