Dennis's Story
Life
It took a while for me to grow up, but Vietnam will do that to you. My Mother, an angel from heaven.
Oh, the high school days, or is that daze. Freshman basketball 12-1; cut by Mr. Campbell (JV) for smoking-lesson learned, not, time to rebell; suspended for long hair the day after the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan, thanks Mr. O; Judge Irene Pancoste (sp) what a doll to make you cut your hair! the beginning of life's confusion; career student-classes of '66, '67, '68; not doing school work and skipping to wait for someone special to get into my class (unfortunate mistake); where were you when Kennedy was shot (Miss Hammers typing class);the dances at the YMCA, St. Mary's CYO, The Swishers parties; Jon Andre, where is he today; the Bostonians; the British Walkers; the Broken Lymbs; the Confessions of Blues; Brookville Swim Club; the 56 Chevy convertible (I wish I had a picture of that car now; the 57 Chevy Wagon; days and nights at Hunting Towers-"we all live in a green Chevrolet"; the Original Hot Dog at Baileys X Roads; wise Mrs. Huhn, you were soooo right; mean ol' Miss T(Taylor) mean, not; the inspiration of Miss Hammer, Miss Hatwood and Miss Coe; good ol' Mr. McGuirk; the memories shared with Linda Huhn, "Shitty Creekers",Bonnie Higgins, Linda Hitt, Roxann Ontko, Mickey Funkhouser, Steve Kennedy, Max, Guy and Spence Gardner, Bryan Patrick, Matthew Sneadle, Carl Burba, Ji...Expand for more
m Dooley, Bubbi and Butch Manni, the Phantom, Melody, Bobby and Billy Foster and so many more that I can't begin to jot them all down; ahhh Senior skip day at GW Bassins Inn and the chair fire later that day; my draft notice-the beginning of the end of innocence.
RVN
Return home; life will be different but I won't understand for a long, long time; get married have kids; baseball umpire 14 years, football official high school and college (still going after 43 years); great job with Special Olympics (sad ending as always)-good job in sporting goods business; get divorced after 13 years; get married, another angel found (still going strong after 30 years); Inducted into the Northern Virginia Football Hall of Fame (what an honor!); Associates degree in General Studies; BA degree in History; six (and counting (I think) lovely grandchildren; "What a Wonderful Life" when there are no nightmares! Still crazy after all these years.
Move to the Shenandoah Valley and try to figure out where life went. Oh the high school days, or is that daze? Although I would like to have been more solid in my youthful years, they made me what I am today and that is good, when there are no nightmares.
Hail GW, I will always remember!
PS
Rest in Peace Mickey Funkhouser; believe it or not, I still have our most treasured possession from the summer of '67; that Country Club Malt Liquer pop top chain
