Charlene's Story

Life I was the weird girl around school. I didn't wear pants until my senior year, and I never wore shorts. Those were my parents rules. Needless to say I am much different now. I live in McCalla, Alabama with my husband of 15 years, and my two children (Ashlee & Bradley). I am teaching at a private school. My best friend in high school was Jody Williams. I missed the reunion because I went into premature labor. School I went to So. Chas. from 10th - graduation. I missed a lot of school because my health was not good. I never felt like I fit in or was welcome to be there. Jody Williams was pretty much my only friend throughout high school. None of us knew what the other kid was going through, but that was not a good time for me. My home life wasn't like other peoples. Never the less I gradutated with good grades. College I began attending Tennessee Temple University fall of 1989. I lived on the fourth floor of Demoss Dormitory during that year and the first semester of the the next year. I married Bill Corkren on Dec. 7, 1990. After finishing my exams I joined my husband in Kentucky until he left for Kuwait. Once he returned from Dessert Storm, we both returned to Temple and continued our education until we both graduated in May of 1995. We had a lot of fun while we were at Temple. I remember the cafeteria was ok. Once before we were married we were campused at the same time, along with several of our friends, but we managed to get around it by staying in the cafeteria for long periods of time. lso went to the library a lot during that time. We made several good friends during that time of our lives. We currently keep in touch with Chris Davis and his wife Tammy Underwood Davis. Bill and I both worked a lot while we were in college, that is why it took us so long to graduate. Workplace I began working long before most people I knew. When I was young I started keeping our house. I don't know why neither one of my parents kept house, but if I didn't want to be embarrassed when people came over I had to keep things cleaned up. I was around 8 when I started taking care of my family in that way. Around Jr. High I started babysitting for several families in our church, but this was just on special occasions. I continued to keep our house. In high school, not only did I keep our house, but I also worked at McDonald's in the Town Center Mall in Charleston, West Virginia. Once I went to college I participated in the work study program until I got married. After I was married I started babysitting a couple of kids for some doctors. Some where a long that time I also started working for a janitorial service and quickly became a supervisor. After college my husband and I moved to the Birmingham, Alabama area and I began teaching. I have taught at La Petite Academy, Flint Hill Christian School, Bessemer Academy, and Garywood Christian School. Currently I am a homemaker, which seems to be the toughest job of all, but it makes me happy to know I am taking care of my family. Military I have not served in the military.
