Amie's Story

Sept 2008 All I want for Christmas is - - - This summer Mike and I hosted a 14 year old Russian orphan, Vladik. Our neighbor hosted two girls, Vikka and Katia. All three are teenagers and got along great - which worked out well because we don't speak one cent worth of Russian (unless Vodka actually means something). We both worked days, so Vladi and the girls had to entertain themselves a lot. Throw in trips to Disneyland, Universal Studios, the Beach, Horse Back Riding, Swimming, 3 Bikes, a Dog, a Piano, etc..., all the American food you can eat (pastrami, potato chips, pizza). In terms of prospective adoptive parents - They Scored! I never thought riding a bike was something I took for granted growing up. Everyone I know had a bike by 6. By 10 we were jumping curbs and sliding out. Me and Vlad set out to ride bikes one morning. Vlad wiped out 5 doors down. From that day on, the three of them rode bikes all the time. And every night the bikes would come back broken: brake cables undone, flat tires, the seat loose (How'd that...? Why...?). And every night me and Mike would get out the tool box and Allen wrenches and put the bikes back together. Vlad came equipped with his own Flash drive to carry around all his photo¿s and games, as well as the entire 5th and 6th season of "Charmed", complete with Russian voiceover, which played constantly. e all teenagers this obsessive? I know nothing about raising kids. Mike's raised a step son and has a personality that kids love - animated, enthusiastic, happy. I'm not comfortable around children at all. Mike worked all summer and left me in charge. I fell in love with these orphans. The two girls are sisters and refuse to be adopted separately. The younger one really seems to want a mom and reminds me of a cat - always watching. The most at ease I ever saw her was alone at the piano. The older one has a beautiful smile and seems more like a 17 year old than a 13 year old. Vladik lives in a different orphanage than the girls and is the oldest child there. He takes charge of situations and I suspect he spends a great deal of time looking after the younger kids. In Ukraine they kick the kids to the curb at 16. Vladik's 14 1/2. There are few jobs in Ukraine and rarely an opportunity for an orphan. God send Angels. What an experience! These kids were so much fun to have around. I loved the energy and constant chatter, which was the part I didn¿t think I¿d like. So for Christmas I told Mike, I want not one but ¿Three Russian Orphans¿. They cost $10,000 a piece (not including education, cell phones, and clothes). I'm checking to see if they¿ll give us a discount on three... Love and Peace ~ Amie PS: New favorite song ~ Beck:Orphans
