started out as a tank platoon leader but was fortunate enough to later take command of a scout platoon which allowed me to interact not only with my unit, but with other combat units at several command levels. My battalion was an elite unit, and we worked hard and played hard. Yes, we were under a lot of stress, but on the plus side, we had every brewery in Germany working overtime to help us along. In retrospect, my most profound thoughts about my military experience can be summed up in one sentence: I never had to fire a shot in anger. Many of my comrades served in Vietnam and I am eternally grateful that to the best of my knowledge, each and every one of them made it back home safely.
