David's Story

After my pretty poor high school time, I worked a year at the mill, then went to Ohio State for a year. Decided I needed a change so I joined the Air Force and became a Signals Intelligence Analyst and made a career of it. Spent alot time overseas in Thailand, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, England, and Germany and time in Texas, Hawaii, and Nevada. I got married to my wife, Chris (who is from Hsinchu, Taiwan) in San Antonio, Texas in 1985. I have a step son who is a Registered Nurse in the US Army with tours in Afghanistand and Iraq. I retired from the Air Force in 1994 from Nellis AFB in Las Vegas and stayed here. Worked for Clark County District Attorney's Office as a child support caseworker/trainer for 13 and a half years, then resigned to take a full time position with my union of 10,000 members, SEIU Local 1107 where I had been a steward and a trustee on the executive board. I am now in a staff leadership position with the union, training stewards, representing members, and developing and implementing plans for action. As a result of my union position I was appointed to the Citizens Committee on Community Prioriites by Rory Reid, chair of the Clark County Commission and candiidate for Governor of Nevada. I and my three fellow union activiists on the committee stood up for workers in the public sector as the majority of the committee was made up of business owners. I have kept my rather ...Expand for more
leftwing views throughout my life even while in the military and am active in the antiwar movement in Las Vegas as a member of Veterans for Peace and Nevada Workers against the War. In addition to anti war activism, I have also been active in Occupy Las Vegas a movement to get money out of politics and level the economic playing field for the middle and working classes. My activism with Occupy lead to an arrest for civil disobedience on the national day of action November 17, 2011 and ended up on the NBC nightly news and the MSNBC The Ed Show for my arrest. I went back to Steubenville for the first time 30 or so years this year for the 40th Reunion of the Class of 70, it was great seeing those who showed up. My wife Chris and I reside in Las Vegas (where I retired from the USAF) with our three dogs.. June 29, 2012 is my last day of work as I am retiring from my third and final job. I intend to remain in Las Vegas, but will probably visit Ohio more frequently since my brother Bob (class of 66) is moving back to the Columbus area from South Carolina in August 2012. Update January 2013, I have been retired for six months now. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer the day before I retired and had my prostate removed in August and have pretty much recovered now and am cancer free. I am enjoying having more time to spend with my wife and our dogs and time to visit with my son and four grandchildren.
