Catherine's Story
After some time, it's come time to post a little of my story here. While I have some good memories of Mayfair, not many people knew what I was dealing with at the time. Much of this was due to my being too young to understand it all - which statement I hope many of you may also understand, as we are all so much older and hopefully more mature. Many people will not remember what I went through at Roosevelt with Betty Ryder. Thanks to the Abrams' and my continued interest in music with Staudigel, that incident prevented my achieving anything academically at Mayfair. I basically wrote off the school and focused upon community interests in music. The story is too long to relate here of how Mayfair and those community interests intertwined over these past ten years.
After graduating early from Mayfair, I had been accepted at UCLA but family life intervened. After a lot of personal issues, I attended UC Berkeley in the 1980s, got a degree in philosophy and dealth with some health issues. My main friendship at Berkeley, with my professor George Myro, led finally to intellectual challenge and growth. Those tools helped me deal with all which has followed. George died right after I graduated, and over the years I have lived many places in the country and grown in many ways.
Suffice it to say, I am involved in conservative politics. What many people are fighting in our country today, I experienced from a certain standpoint in my experiences at Mayfair. ...Expand for more
This was part of why I could never relate to many of you in both hs and college - a truly sad outcome for any young person who should be entitled to all the positive relationships high school is supposed to provide, and which could have helped me. Nevertheless, these lessons were necessary and at last coming to fruition.
I don't know whether enough time has passed for those still (yes, still) working against me. I came up against some of these when I heard Ryder was being forced out back in 1999. I got enough of a fair hearing at least, discovering that there were no official records of my old complaint although parents and the district had been directly involved, and the entire incident helped me stop some very bad people.
As a deeply religious person (Chuck Ostgaard - I very much remember 5th grade afterschool bible at your house and deeply appreciate it) I have come to understand the role I have played and the pathway I had to walk. I often tell people that, given where I started, and given our fallen world, it was as it had to be - and God has richly rewarded me with, I hope, wisdom about it all.
I live in East Tennessee, and life is beautiful and too full with so much to do and read and continue learning. I never married and have no children, but that too is as it had to be - for now. I continue to get involved with the conservative patriot movement, my churches, and writing about it all amidst the beauty of God's creation in our great country.
