Patrice's Story

Life After high school, I took a French class and travelled to Quebec, and I visited other friends in college. I then went to live and work in California. I lived with my Grandmother and worked for several years before starting college. I lived a healthy, athletic, lifestyle in California and loved my new life there. I dated a percussionist for several years, but we eventually took different paths in life. I went to study at Berkeley (first music and then Sociology) and he went to the Conservatory to continue his studies in Music. After I graduated from Berkeley with a BA and membership in an honor's society, I worked for a non-profit for several years. I liked the work but found I could not move up in the organization without an advanced degree, so I decided to travel for a year while I applied to graduate school. I traveled and lived in Spain for several months where I tutored English and also took the GRE. (It's a beautiful country - also visited Paris!) I decided to go to attend a University in the midwest, where I studied Sociology and Statistics. My father also passed away that year, which was very difficult for our family. In graduate school, I met many new friends and obtained new skills. I also started going to Church regularly again. (Before that I was very interested in Yoga and meditation and read some of the Buddhist and Hindu texts and just attended church for the big holidays.) It was in graduate school that I met my husband, Paul. He was also a member of the church I attended on campus. He is now employed for the government. I left graduate school before completing my doctorate, to pursue a career as a research analyst/statistical programmer. I worked for about six years in private industry in research and development. During those years I travelled a lot around the country, attended conferences, and also drove a Volvo (which was a lot of fun!). Paul and I married after I moved to Maryland in 2000. I sold the Volvo. We bought a small SUV, and we are now hoping to start a family thro...Expand for more
ugh adoption. We spend a lot of time with our families, occasionally go see a baseball game, or attend the symphony and we love to go out to bookstores and cafes. I am also pursuing a new career in business and I am working on an MBA with an emphasis in sustainable business practices (the green MBA). My life has taken many different twists and turns over the years. I've fulfilled some of the dreams I had in high school, though not all (yet) and have new dreams as well. Best wishes, Patrice School My favorite year in grade school was probably 6th grade. That was the year I petitioned the school for more athletic sports for girls, particpated on a student-faculty committee to review the dress code (remember when girls couldn't wear pants to school - we changed that!), participated in an informal debate with other classmates, enjoyed the science fair and was an accompianist for the choir at CM and in East Moriches. It was a fun year. Throughout grade school, I liked all of my classes and have fond memories of many of the teachers, classmates and the principal, Mr. Huey. ! In junior high and high school, I enjoyed many extra-curricular activities: Music, Field Hockey, Drama Club, Field Hockey, Latin Club, Field Hockey, Art, Key Club, Field Hockey, Orchestra (that was not as well funded so only lasted a few years), Field Hockey, Chorus... I think you get the picture! I enjoyed all of my classes and activities, especially field hockey! I wasn't that great at all of the sports - a flop at gymnastics (!), and could serve but do nothing else in volleyball, and softball and basketball just weren't happening for me either, though I made the effort and joined the team. Track would have been good if we actually had a team! (Apparently Title IX was thought to be a fad!) But in spite of some of the shortcomings, I liked all of my classes... English, Science, all of it. I also still like to read (another favorite activity in high school - something to do with librarians in the family). Best wishes! Patrice
