Ronnie's Story

Lets see...Graduated High school in 88. I joined the Army and was stationed in Hawaii, the island of Oahu, till Jan. 92. First unit was HHC 65th Engineer Battalion, for about a year. Then transferred to Aco. 84th Engineer Battalion for the remainder of my time there, about 2 years. I traveled, for the Army, to "The Big Island" called Hawaii. An area called PTA (Pacific Training Area). My unit built a road (I drove a 5 ton dumptruck for this project). Other parts of the unit Built a Fire training area for their fire departments to use. Another part of the unit renovated their open air food market, similar to a flea market for freshly cought fish, fruits and vegetables, etc. A new roof and stainless steel tables here (they had been using table sized stones, not very sanitary). I was also sent to Johnson Island in the Pacific. It is where the military disposes of outdated munitions. It is a very small island 1 mile wide and 2 1\2 miles long. Basically a runway for aircraft and a few buildings. There I was part of the design team remodeling their barracks. After returning home, I had a year at NKU and made the National Deans List. Missed Army life and joined reserves. I spent about a year assigned to an engineer unit in Columbus Ohio. When a position opened in Ft. Thomas Kentucky I jumped all over it, it was much closer to home. The unit was the 478th Engineer Battalion. You may of heard of it, it was one of the first reserve units activated and sent to Iraq. I was out before that happened. I did do a bit of traveling for that reserve unit, St. Kitts in the Caribbean. The projects there were building a barracks for their military/police, I had a part in its design and drawings. I also went to Indiantown Gap Pennsylvania for PLDC (Primary Leadership Development Course). I finished second in the class, one question away from a tie for first. I also went to Ft. Knox Kentucky for Combat Engineer school, so that I could be promoted. I received my Sgt. stripes shortly after returning from the school. I finished my reserve time in 94. Worked in a couple printing shops as a press operator. Worked in a bowling center/gameroom as a desk clerk then they added bartending. I was trained a bit in the back on the pinsetters. Occationally, did some work as Asst. Manager, and managed the arcade gameroom in the center. Was self employed for a bit doing carpentry and roofing. Managed to get a hernia and had to find a less intense job, no health insurance. Drove a cab, corporate vehicles and limos as well as dispatched for a transportation company. In Dec 96 was hired by a major machine tool company as a sheet metal handler, then promoted to a machinist on a surface grinder, did some assembly work then back to the grinder. During this time my life got pretty wild. (Some things shouldn...Expand for more
't be discussed in public.) In Nov 2000 my son Russell was born. In Feb 2004 God rang my bell and I had to do something different in my personal life. I had gotten way out of hand in some areas. In March 06 married Nancy. In June 07 I was diagnosed with a disease called AA Amyloidosis. You can get details on the disease at wikip edia.org. I have spent the last year fighting this rare illness, and trying to find what has caused it. I have had to see Doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for diagnosis and treatment, most of the local doctors have no experience with how to treat amyloidosis. I was lucky, my hematologist has had some dealings with amyloid and he was wise enough to refer me to an amyloid expert at the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo doctors believe I have a genetic disorder called HIDS or Hyperimmunoglobulinemia D with recurrent fever. The test to confirm this didn't confirm it, but it couldn't rule it out either. I have been tested for every known cause and all were ruled out. Also, my current medicine is used to treat HIDS and it seems to be working. No other medication that I have tried has had any substantial results. I read somewhere that there have only been a handful of cases, in relation to worlds population, diagnosed worldwide, and only a few of that handful have developed amyloidosis due to this genetic disorder. I have been told that the odds of hitting the lottery big are better than the odds of getting these diseases together. Due to the success of this medicine and with all other known possibilities ruled out, this is what they think is causing the amyloidosis. About 1 in 3000 of the US population is diagnosed with amyloidosis. Many die each year because they are not diagnosed or misdiagnosed. I am fortunate that God gave me a doctor who recognized the illness before it was too late. Last year, Oct time frame, I was very close to death. My doctors tell me they thought they were going to lose me. I thank God that He gave me some more time to enjoy life, my family, and possibly make a difference in the lives of others. UPDATE Sept. 05, 2008: Admitted to hospital, kidney and liver failure. After 18 days of in the hospital, and having to start dialysis, I was discharged to go to the Mayo clinic in Minnesota for a foll-up visit. Now I continue my fight having dialysis added to my regiment of treatments. On the good side, my kidneys continue to slowly improve and I am told by my doctors that it is very possible that they may improve to the point of coming off dialysis, thank God. It is rare that someone is able to come off dialysis, but God is in control and is still in the miracle business. I have made many mistakes in my life and I hope that I can help others not make the same ones. If you want to know more contact me, I be glad to reply. God Bless
