Dean's Story
- Brown University 1966-1970 (the heart of the Woodstock era - I went!): became long-hair, played bass in rock band, partied way too hard; I'll never forget the night of the first draft lottery (barely missed me); got into law school by the skin of my teeth; took up motorcycling, which became a lifelong passion (I still have 3).
- NYU Law School, 1970-1973: "Scared straight," worked my butt off and made Law Review, Order of the Coif. Sunday morning motorcycle rides were my only time off from the grind. Second year summer, did summer associateship at Paul, Weiss. Third year, worked 30 hrs/week at Wachtell, Lipton (then a tiny start-up.
- Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, NYC, 1972-1976: Did my "apprenticeship" as a lawyer, worked like a slave, but had some great times (ah, that shared summer house in the Hamptons!).
- U.S. Attorney's Office, Los Angeles, 1977-1982: Went to get trial experience; became chief of white-collar crime unit and had many great fraud and political corruption cases; almost stayed and became career prosecutor. Upon departure, wrote a book about one of my cases, Empire of Deceit, publis...Expand for more
hed by Doubleday in 1985. Met my future wife (from Phoenix)and dated her long-distance.
- Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue (LA office), 1982-2003: Joined as an associate, became a partner a year later and stayed another 21. Did General Litigation, primarily representing Fortune 500 clients (Firestone, IBM, Cushman & Wakefield, Tenet Healthcare, etc). Returned to playing in a rock band with some very talented guys, 1994-2000. Wife divorced me 1995; had to rebuild financially. With no kids to put through college, took early retirement 12/31/03 to pursue my lifelong dream of coaching high school football and "giving something back."
- High school football coach, Los Angeles area, 2004 to present. Lovin' it!!! Two championships so far, and hopefully more to come.
- Would like to remarry, but haven't found the right lady yet.
- Still love reptiles; have had several pet alligators and many pet snakes over the years; have had my gorgeous Indian python "Ali" for 15 years now, and he's still going strong.
- Motorcycling and photography (thank you Mr. Lothrop and Monte Davis!) remain passions of mine. Fanatic NY Giants fan too.
