Larry's Story

Life 25 years later - Here’s my opportunity to be philosophical and reflective on my successes and failures. How do I measure my success and what to use as a barometer to gauge this success? Personal income, acquisitions, relationships, spiritual or personal growth may all be indicators. Possibly it’s only a matter of opinion and is it my opinion or is it exclusively the readers? I do confess that my name is not emblazoned on the side of any buildings or on the cover of any magazine; I’m not even in the phone book. My life certainly didn't turn out as I had expected. I never entertained the thought of working in aerospace as an engineer or living where I do, yet here I am. Fate, luck, determination, or God’s grace may all be contributors to these experiences and events. That’s fine, except I don’t believe in fate or luck. Through trial and error I’ve allowed events to transpire as well as making things happen. Opinions are made and books are written on both subjects and aren’t exclusive to either. I’ve discovered that while physical pain has its drawbacks emotional pain is the most devastating. I’ve experienced the death of my son, divorce once, and recently my mother passing away. I’ve also broken a foot rock climbing, been involved in a motorcycle accident, and a snow skiing accident. While the physical pain may be annoying, the emotional pain far out weights the former. As for failures, why bother, is it to anyone’s advantage to admit, “Yes, I’ve fallen on my face...” other than an outward display of humility? I’ve never been arrested, I'm not an alcoholic, never been to anyone’s rehab, never taken up cult religions, no body piercing(s), and never went postal. I was once compared to a 5 act play written backwards, also a paradox. I've even had a poem or two written by me (see paradox). I’ve been called a few names, but I’ve managed some accolades along the way to offset the dips in the road. In the line of successes and accomplishments—in no particular order—I have a great job that pays well, worked on some really cool aircraft and space programs, investments, retirement accounts, money in the bank, a pension in the distant future, a mortgage on a really nice home, own all my vehicles [read-no car payments], married a beautiful lady that brought three neat children with her (currently 14, 19, 23), good friends, three dogs, zero credit card debt, and am blessed to be in good health to enjoy all of this. I have been to a few places, seen some things, done a few things, and encountered more nice people than unpleasant ones along the way. I’ve said before that I’ve only once said something truly profound that was all my own. However, for the life of me I can’t recall what it was. It would have made a great bumper sticker. joyed my ramblings here, if so drop me a line, I probably remember you. School School, to put it bluntly, I avoided school every chance I got. Notice I wasn't there? When the beach or the mountains were calling, why go to class? Ditched constantly, yet still managed to pull down decent grades and graduated with my class. Notice I was there? I sat between Scott and Helena during the commencement. College I started out as an electronics engineering student. After two years I decided I didn't want to be an engineer. Finally majored in Business Administration (BSBA) but I still ended up as an (aircraft weapon systems) engineer. Workplace I worked a variety of positions in quality control, electronics manufacturing, and testing since I left the Air Force and then moved into aerospace in 1989 and have been there since. In aerospace I started with Rockwell International - North American Aircraft Division on the B-1B bomber program as a Technical Writer in Fenruary 1989. I remained in this position also working on the AC-130U Gunship program and again on B-1B. Following Boeing's acquisition of the division in 1996 I once again bounced between the two programs working either as a tech writer or software adminstator. I then made a move over to our Space Systems division and was involved on the Space Shuttle Columbia as an Estimating and Proposal Specialist also working on International Space Station and X-37. I really enjoyed my time on the Shuttle program unfortunately this was short lived and after 1.5 years the orbiter vehicle left Palmdale for good and so did most of the jobs associated with it. I was fortunate to transfer back to my old position on B-1B program without losing any time [read - no layoff]. At this point I was very bored with the old routine and started to put out feelers and picked up on a position at Lockheed which was across the runway from my then location at US Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale. I've since been with Lockheed-Martin Aeronautics division in Palmdale from October 2003 and worked as a Weapons System Engineer on the F-117A fighter aircraft program. I had a blast (no pun) doing it! I'm now working as Mission Avionics Systems engineer. Military June 1980 - Enlisted in the US Air Force, delayed enlistment program. November 1980 - Entered basic training at Lackland AFB TX, 3723rd BMTS. January 1981 - Tech School 3451 TTS, Lowry AFB, Denver CO. Integrated Avionics Manual Test Station and Component Specialist (32635B) for F-15A/B/C aircraft. June 1981 - Permanent party at Eglin AFB, FL. 33rd Tactical Fighter Wing/33rd CRS. Great job, responsible for maintaining F-15 integrated avionics systems; Comm/Nav, Radar, Flight Controls and Indicators. I just didn't care for Florida, pretty white beaches with nothing but beach break unless a hurricane is coming your way. I miss it and the uniform. Nothing of any consequence happened while I was in. Communisim was defeated several years later if you want to count that?
