Allen's Story

I'm a retired military musician who continues to perform on euphonium and bass/tenor trombones. I never was able to put the horns down. My wife Margaret is also a musician and a music teacher. She plays viola, violin, and piano. (Reading more than one staff at a time is something that I just marvel at and envy because I can't do it - yet. When I retire for good, I'm going to learn how to tickle the ivories.) We live in mid-Missouri and after a bunch of years of moving around, we'd like to stay put for awhile. We have two parrots at home who function as our children, since we don't have any kids with each other. We have a Solomon Islands eclectus (female) and a Congo African grey (also female). They each have their own distinctive personalities which makes for some interesting observations... Just recently we added a golden retriever to our menagerie. She's a puppy, but is growing fast. She's also developing into a classic golden - incredibly devoted to her family/pack. For the two-legged kids, they're not kids any more. Angela and Brandon live in the Dayton, OH area, and they each have 4 and 2 kids, respectively. I have another daughter Jessica, who lives in Berlin. I'm originally from the Detroit area, but due to my military career and maybe a touch of wanderlust, I've lived in a bunch of places. Of my 20-year career in the military, I spent 15 of those years in Germany. I le...Expand for more
arned to speak the language fluently through formal and informal study and practice, although I don't have much occasion these days to use it. I was fortunate and privileged to have been stationed in Berlin during a significant part of the Eighties, particularly during the events which led to the Wall coming down. It was a very interesting time in world history, especially for a musician. We were able to perform in areas of Germany that hadn't been visited by westerners in 45 years or more, and we broke bread with Soviet soldiers and musicians. Musically, those guys don't take any prisoners! It took me 10 years to get my BA in Management from the University of Maryland. I was active duty military at the time so I had to go slow, doing a lot of nights and weekends. Hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do! Since retirement from the military, I continue to work as a quality assurance professional in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. It's a challenging way to make a living. I have other interests including motorcycling (I own a Honda 919), history (I'm researching and writing a book on an Army band), and practicing my instruments. Working on the house - a never-ending task - is also something that threatens to engulf me. More than anything, I love spending time with my wife. She is my best friend and my confidante. I feel very blessed and fortunate to have found her.
