Roger's Story
Life
Joined the United States Navy in October 1975. Spent a year and a half in schools before finally getting stationed on shore duty in Norfolk, VA between 1977-1979. Stationed onboard U.S.S. Kalamazoo/AOR-6, homeported in Norfolk, VA from 1979-1981. Left the service in September 1981 but returned in May 1982 for personal reasons that are no longer valid. Stationed onboard U.S.S. Emory S. Land/AS-39, homeported in Norfolk, VA from 1982-1985. Met and moved in with the lady who is now my wife while she was stationed on the same ship. Stationed on shore duty in Virginia Beach, VA from 1985-1989. Married my wife, Vernita, April 20th,1989 at her mother's home in Little Rock, AR after living together for five years. Stationed onboard U.S.S. Coral Sea/CV-43, homeported in Norfolk, VA until it was decommissioned in April 1990. Stationed onboard U.S.S. McCloy/FF-1038, homeported in Norfolk, VA until it was decommissioned in December 1990. Stationed onboard U.S. Shenandoah/AD-44, homeported in Norfolk, VA from December 1990-December 1992. ars. It was during this time that I joined both the American Legion, where I am still an active member, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars where I am a life member. Since I retired I have played househusband to my wife while she finishes up her tour of duty in the U.S. Navy. In 1999 she was transferred to Ingleside, TX. I followed her in 2000 once we sold our home in VA. We lived in TX until 2002 when she got orders overseas to La Maddalena, Sicily. La Maddalena is a small resort island off the northern coast of Sicily and you can drive around the entire island in about 25 minutes! She finally retired from the U.S. Navy at the end of 2006 when we returned the U.S. for good. We bought a nice home right across the street from a lake in Sherwood, Arkansas in July of 2007 and that is where we presently reside. I worked for awhile at Fidelity National Information Services where I handled chargebacks and fraud for Visa and MasterCard. Then I worked for about four years at Wal-Mart as an overnight stocker and then as a sales associate in the Tire and Lube Express area. Since May of this year (2014) I am presently enjoying my retirement and loving every minute of it.
