Donaldson's Story
Life
Have been married for 48 years and have a daughter, 47 and one grandson, 17! He's busy making applications to colleges and universities. He is a good writer and loves his music. Plays sax, clarinet and base guitar. Doesn't know what he wants to do!
My wife is battling cancer, and it looks like maybe I'll be doing the same after we get hers through the treatment phase.(radiation) Her prognosis is good for a full recovery. I don't think mine is life threatening, but it is beginning to look like something needs to be done.
Update: Norma passed in 2016 & grandson graduated from U.C. Santa Cruz....physics major, & works for Sunrun solar energy company. I am 92 and still chugging!!
School
Y'all know I graduated form Litchfield H.S. Was only there for my senior year. Previously attended schools in San Diego, CA; West Hartford, CN; Sacramento, CA; back to San Diego, Coronado, and finally Litchfield. A military family travels a lot!!
College
Went to U.C. Davis, studied Animal Science for a year and then shifted my major to Plant Science (Agronomy) and Ag. Engineering. It was a huge campus in those days, but only about 1200 students. Was a lousy judge of cattle, hogs and sheep, made me decide I was in the wrong end of the business!!
Workplace
Worked for Pacific Gas & Electric, first as Pump Test Engineer, then Farm Power Adviser, Agrigcutural Power Engineer in Bakersfield, CA.. Then was Manager at Taft, CA for 2 years and then went to the General Office in San Francisco to head up the Agricultural Sales & Marketing Program for the company. We eventual...Expand for more
ly became the Energy Conservation Dept. I was an active member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE), worked with other utilities funding research projects concerning uses of electricity and energy conservation in agriculture. It was a fun job and I retired after 30 years in April, 1987. I'm still active in ASAE and attend the big Ag. Expo at Tulare every year. Other than that, I am a gardener, walker, bicycler and traveler, although health problems (my wife's) have kept us close to home for the last two years.
Military
After finishing my 2 year certificate in Agriculture at U.C. Davis I worked for a farming company for a couple of years and then was draften into the Army, much to the disgust of my Naval Aviator Father!! Did Basic Training at Fort Ord, CA, and then went to Counter Intelligence Corps School at Ft. Holabird, MD. From there was assigned as a special agent to 702nd CIC Detachment at Fort Rucker, AL which later moved to Ft McClelland, AL., the home of the Army Chemical Corps. school. They were also building a new school for the WACS, but not finished before I left. We did mostly background security clearance investigations, and were on stand-by to go to Korea. We never made it out of Alabama though, except I spent 3 months at 3rd Army Headquarters Intelligence Office in Atlanta, GA. Mostly shuffled papers, reviewed files, etc. Not very exciting, but something different to do! Was discharged after 2 years service and went back to U.C. Davis to get my B.S. in Plant Science, major: Agronomy; minor: Agricultural Engineering.
