Theresa's Story

Life I'm now living in New Mexico with three dogs, Rex, Blaze & Chunk and one cat, Miss EZ Kitty. I've been here a little over three years & I love it. My winter clothing now consists of sweats, if it's really cold! After graduation from St. Greg's in '59 I went to college, but that only lasted one semester & I quit & went to business college. After completing that I bounced around for a while working for a manufacturing company, Joslyn; a music publisher, H. T. FitzSimons; and an advertising company, Compton Advertising. While at Compton I met & married Fred Koch a graduate of St. Ben's. We had a daughter, Kathryn Ann, born on 01Jul62. Our marriage didn't last & we divorced. I never re-married. I worked for the Chicago Board of Education for about 3 years & then went to work for the Chicago Police Department as a civilian. While working for the CPD I also joined the Naval Reserves at worked out at Glenview Naval Air Station. I legally changed our names from Koch to Cook as nobody could ever pronounce it correctly. Besides, all it really was is an Americanization of the name. My daughter, Kathy, was killed in an auto accidnet while riding her bike in Auguest of 1973 while we were living in Barrington. We had moved out there because my Father became Chief of Police there after he retired for the CPD. I had a extremely hard time adjusting to her loss. I still do at times, but for the most part I do OK. In 1976, while still working for CPD as a civilian, I was accepted into the Police Acadamy & became a Chicago Police Officer. During my time with the Department I worked in the 20th District (the old Summerdale, later called Foster Ave. & the one in which St. Greg's is located) & 24th District, the new Rogers Park District. Later I worked in Women's Centeral Detention at 11th & State where I spent about six & a half years, mostly on midnights. I ended my career with the Dep...Expand for more
artment as a Dispatcher on Zone 4, covering the 1st & 18th Districts; the Loop & Chicago Ave. Districts respectivly. I moved out to New Mexico a little over a year after the death of my Mother at age 98. My Father had been dead for about 12 years at that time. He died in 1989 due to Alzheimers. I didn't move out here alone, I brought 2 young men with me. Both son's of fellow Police Officers. Phil (now 30) moved back to Chicago, but has come out for visits. David (now 25)is still out here. He is living with me again. He's become a supervisor with UPS & is still going to school to get his Associates Degree in Fire Science. He has become a certified Wildland Firefighter, Firefighter 1, & took & passed his EMT-B (Basic) course & is state certified. This summer he will be training for EMT-I (Intermediate) & taking the exam for his state certificate. I'm really proud of him. His older brother Robert (now 30) (Bobby to me, but Rob to his friends) moved out here a year later than David. Right now he is in Iraq woring as a civilian contractor on something called M-RAPS. He's my oldest Godson & lived with me in Chicago from the time he was 15. He went to & graduated from St. Gregs. Their sister Kelly (now 39) has also lived here with me, but is now living up in Albuquerque w/her boyfriend Keith. She is divorced & the mother of two, Angel who just turned 11 & JR who is 8. They live in Idaho w/their father, but she is trying to get everything together so that they can live with her. I've not seen or heard from anyone from St. Greg's in years & would love to hear from my classmates. I'd be especially intrested in hearing from the group I used to hang with, Bill Buhl, Steve Bauer, Mike Adams, Tom Fowley, Marge Easterbrook, Andrea Martens. So if anyone out there knows where they are, have them get in touch. I'd appreciate it. Hope to hear from some Greg's grads soon.
