Jerry's Story

Life Long strange trip, without a doubt. I'll try to keep it brief. '86-busted for drunk driving. Jumped bail, moved to Pacifica, Ca. Vegitated on couch for a while. Became really interested in eastern religions, mostely buddhism and zen. '89-dad loses job, moves in with his parents. I move into my van for 4 months. End of '89 start taking lots of lsd. Not vitamin a, like we joked about in school. "friends" give me a really bad trip by making me believe they were going to kill me on a camping trip in marin's wine country. '90-move to Berkeley and grow my hair down to my butt. Freaky beard. Lived like a hippie all over the east bay. '97- move to the hood in Oakland. Drive-byes, crack dealers all up and down the streat, crack hoes. Cheap rent in the nicest house on the block. Sweet pad. Crazy, obsessive-compulsive neat-freak roommate. She needed to be on meds, big time. '89-visit family in Oregon for holidays. Dad tells me he's had a really bad sore throat for a few months, is going to a doctor for tests. A couple of days after I get back to bay area I get a call from my aunt. Dad has asophogeal cancer, only had 5 months to live. I travel back and forth between Ca. and Or. to visit my dad. Take care of him at home for the last 6 weeks, driving him to and from chemo. He dies at home in my grandfather's chair. That, the crazy roommate, the hood, all of that start to drive me literally crazy. '02-Help my n...Expand for more
eighbor move to Montana. Passing through Idaho I get busted for weed. Eventually spend 5 days in the county jail. Cut my hair before going to jail because I was afraid the hillbillies in Idaho would want to beat my ass in jail. Jail was a cakewalk. Wish I hadn't cut my hair. Chicks dug the hair. I had gorgeous hair. I look slick and clean-cut now. Almost GQ. About 6 months after getting back from Idaho I bail on Ca. and move to Montana. Love it here. Bought a bass guitar many years ago but only really started practicing about a year ago. Had a neighbor who played guitar, could hear him jam through the wall. We started hanging out and jamming. Amazing how practice actually causes improvement. Who woulda guessed? 3/13/05-only got down to 0 degrees last night. Nice to not have to deal with 30 below anymore. Workplace in '88 I join Local Union 510, the sign painters and display union. Never painted diddly because that's actually the trade show installer union in SF. Became journeyman in '90. Made really really good money. Since I moved to Montana I've become a hotel front desk clerk. Went from making $53,000 a year in the bay area to $12,000 a year here. But it's all good because I live about 5 blocks from the entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Still paying my union dues because I have really good seniority and that's a job I'm excellent at. Great job waiting for me if I ever move back there.
