Fred's Story

Well, I wasn't going to do this but a classmate and a friend requested to know what I've been doing since graduation. As you know our class came along during the dawning of the space age, computers were a somewhat new invention. I loved working with my hands and I loved problem solving . I wanted to learn how computers worked and how to fix them. Of course they were huge monsters then. I attended Prince George's Community College. I did not have enough money to continue, then I enrolled at "Project Build". They paid me while I learned! This was a program started to get blacks into the construction trade, where the money was being made. They offered Plumbing, Carpentry, Brick Mason, and Electricity. I was interested in the electricity course, it would put me a little closer to my goal. After graduating from "Project Build", I did some commercial and residential work as an apprentice electrician. But, I still had a desire to work on computers. I decided to enlist, and have the military pay for my education. I enlisted in the Marine Corp and decided to get married before I left for boot camp. They sent me to Viet Nam,where I lost my innocence, and had a front row seat to witness man's inhumanity towards man. After my return, I was assigned to Camp David as a Presidential Honor Guard. That might not have been a good move by "The Corp" since I hated the war(smile) Anyway, I transfered to "The Silent Team". Thanks to the "Cadet" course at Anacostia, I was very good at drilling. We put on shows every Friday and Saturday during the spring and summe...Expand for more
r at the Navy Yard ( 8th & I St., Washington, DC ) and The Iwo Jima Memorial (in Virginia ). We also traveled nationally putting on shows for many different groups. Decided early on that military service was not my cup of tea. After I was discharged, I attended and graduated from "Control Data Institute", where I studied Computer Technology. Upon graduating I received several offers. I remember IBM and Honeywell making an offer. But, there was a new company with a new idea and they needed people to help get their idea off the ground. I thought they had a great idea. I knew I was taking a chance, but if they grew I could grow right along with them! Their computers would allow people to withdraw money from the banks any day at any time! I've been riding the crest of the wave we now refer to as the "ATM" industry. Our class came along during an age of pioneers. I consider myself a pioneer of the "ATM Industry". (way to represent). I see there are others from Anacostia also representing. Go Indians!!! My favorite memories are those of Anacostia and the friendship formed. I was on the stage crew at Anacostia. During our senior year Theresa Black convinced me to come from behind the curtains to perform in the talent show. Do you remember the talent show? I was a go-go boy.(ha,ha,ha!!) As I remember we had a great time! My wish is that "GOD" always smile upon you, and as Bob Hope would say, "thanks for the memories"! Last but not least, I would like to give a shout out to my frat brothers at Anacostia, "HAIL TO 'THE CENTURIONS'!!!
