Alana's Story

Life ~ Live it without fear! Well since I'm not much for staying in one place for very long~catch me if you can~I live in MD ~ Life continues to be anything but dull & you never know where I might be next :o) I'll stick with that part - I've managed to cover a lot of ground in 25 years and even more since I first penned that opening. My "zoo" is growing, Gabriel is 16 & Glorianna is 14, (wahhoooo! 4 more years til I'm free!) my newest "child" Gracie is a Basenji born 1/7/08, we just brought her home from MA. Also have a chinchilla, Savana Monitor, Mali-Uromastyx and 3 rats. I'm done with the really expensive two legged variety, unless they have feathers. We're looking forward to our road trip summer in 08, most of it getting together with my Marine buddies to swap sea stories, drink and make-up new stories about each other.. We're really good at bending the truth into humerous stories at the expense of each other. Really thick skin is a requirement around these nut jobs as well as the ability to sustain under large quantities of alcohol. I also have a class reunion I'm going to attend as well and will visit the fam out west, but have turned it into a road trip so I won't get stuck cleaning out attics and other chores for the 'rents, my small trunk filled with camping equipment will also deter them from sending stuff home with me. ;o) I'm not sure where the ultimate party will be... toss up between McComb MS and KCMO. McComb; I expect the guys will bring out jugs and jugs of moonshine.. coconut is good. KCMO; We'll just get crazy in my ole stomping ground, I lived there from 1993-1999, Westport is the place to party and I'm sure mechanical bulls and clay pigeons will generate some great stories. I was in the Marine Corps from 1987 to 1991 spent most of my time at Camp Pendleton and had a blast working Protocol for a 2-Star General. He was a very cool guy, even cooler was the first lieutenant I worked for/with. He and I are now, both volunteer docents at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico VA. So on occasion we got out with the other docents, also Marines and have a great time. Besides Camp Pendleton I also spent 14 months on Okinawa (Japan) and I'm considered a war era veteran even though I never went to the Gulf during that time frame. From 2000 to 2004 I worked at the Pentagon, nothing glamorous, I was an executive assitant to a manager and a director who were in charge of various aspects of keeping the world's largest office building in good condition (Facilities). It was a great place to be after September 11th because we were in on pretty much all that was going on to restore the building. Oh... I was running late for work that day... got stuck i...Expand for more
n the metro one stop away. I left them to work with a joint task force that worked with WMD's, mostly developing devices to detect, destroy and contain. Again, I was doing admin but it was cool knowing what some of these guys do and how they do it. Then in March of 05 I was offered a position with KBR Services (Halliburton ~ the evil empire) to work in Iraq for a year, I returned early in September 05 due to family problems. I spent most of my time working at Camp Fallujah, Iraq and I'm crazy enough to say I loved it and wish I could have stayed longer and want to go back. Note: Camp Fallujah should not be confused with the city of Al Fallujah - there's about 4 miles difference, despite what you see on the News Al Anbar Province is beautiful country and I got to see some of it while I was there, the best was on a BlackHawk day flight from Camp Liberty (Baghdad) to Camp Fallujah. I also spent a day at Bahariah, which use to be a really nice resort near Fallujah, it's still a beautiful place even with the bombed out walls and buildings - trees still grow and flowers still bloom. I've been back about 2.5 years working for various contractors in DC doing Program/Finanacial Analyst stuff, nothing exciting, just earning a paycheck that gives me the freedom to enjoy life and currently I'm totally enjoying my 1.2 mile commute, the only thing better would be zero miles and working in my pajamas while making the same amount of $$. Next step start maneuvering on a transfer to San Diego in the summer of 2010, I love the DC buzz, but the Wind Chill/Humidity suck! And if I can work a zero mile commute and working from the beach in a bikini and surfing... I'd be one very happy clam. When I'm not working, I'm a volunteer docent at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico VA, my daughter, aka Minnie-Me is a Young Marine in the Quantico Unit and plans to join the Marine Corps when she grows up and will hopefully get into the MP's and be a dog handler/trainer. Gabriel wants to be a Cryptozoologist and live in the jungles of South America. If you served in the Marine Corps you can find me on the Togetherweserved site under Jessica Rabbit, something a Marine in Iraq use to call me. There is a Navy and Air Force site currently active and there is some cross viewing, don't forget to say I invited you. They plan to have an Army site up in the next year or so. I have a MySpace, because a friend was blogging from Afghanistan on it and I had to set up an account to view his pictures... grr! Otherwise, I've had a yahoo account for over 10 years, if you know that secret than I guess you can catch me. My handle is ladyUSMC... I know it's so cliche' but I guess it's a Marine thing.
