Dana's Story
Life
2 Kids: a boy, 16, sophomore in high school and a girl, 15 in May, freshman in high school. 4 Dogs: 1 full Pitbull (I love pitbulls! They have a bad rap!), 1 half Pit, half Boston Terrier and 2 chihuahuas. I want to breed chihuahuas, but I've had a heck of a time finding some boys for my little girls. We're down to 5 cats, from about 10 or so. I had a habit of bringing home cats all the time. I think I'm over it now, at least for awhile! We're living in Central California. The air sucks although we don't live in a big city, all the smog gets sucked into our valley from the big cities. The kids aren't driving yet, but will probably be by this summer. We work, come home, veg, sleep and go back to work. I have a goal of taking the kids back to the rezz before they graduate, but I haven't even managed to get them to Disneyland yet and that's just about 5 hours south of us!!
School
I'm not telling, unless someone else tells first! Everyone probably knows anyway, right?!? My two years at MV were great! My two years at my other school really sucked! That's why I count MVHS as my school!!
College
I was already married and having kids while in college. I went to Shasta Community College in Redding, CA. Oh, yes, I did do a quarter at Cal State L.A. before I ran out of money! I was in a dorm there--they put me in with the guys first, because of my unisex name, I guess! The girls I ended up with were worse then the guys! Then I went to Cal State Chico. I commuted 80 miles each way...Expand for more
! I packed all my classes into two days each week, so I could take care of my babies on the other days (and not pay a baby sitter we couldn't afford!). I graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Studies and two minors, English and Spanish. I then went on to do a full year of student teaching and received my Bilingual Cross-Cultural Language and Academic Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. (Long name, but that's what they were making us do.) A couple years ago I also took a couple ceramics classes at the local JC, Merced Junior College which were a lot of fun. I'd like to take more art classes in the future! I'm thinking of getting a PhD eventually.
Update: 2/28/07
I just finished my Master's in English!! I'm going to do absolutely nothing with it, tho, because there are no full time college jobs here. I may eventually use it to move up to junior high, when I get tired of the little kids I work with now!
Workplace
I've had tons of jobs. Lots of fast food! Easy work to get, keeps you busy and gets you lots of hours. I keep telling my kids that they better start listening to me and learning Spanish so they can get those jobs down here, because they don't seem to be interested in doing anything else with their lives. I teach first grade. This is my 12th year. It's hard work, but I must like it or I would have moved on and tried another grade level by now. The job lets me be creative, I think. And it's fun teaching kids to read and write. I feel like I'm accomplishing something important.
