Kate's Story

Life I left Stadium after sophomore year. My folks moved us to Lakewood and I went to Charles Wright. It was fun. I loved the classes but missed the North End and was grateful for the old friends I had from that era who kept drawing me back to the neighborhood. Kept playing piano and got into theatre. Went to Stanford and had a fabulous time! Directed some dorm productions as well as all-campus shows. Discovered chamber music and got my degree in English. Went to Boston to work in television and finally did, first in news and then as the associate producer of a weekly law program. Moved to a really nice little town in New Jersey (really, it was nice) to develop a weekly business(!) program for the state’s public television network. Got married. Spent a few wild years freelancing. Highlights: assisted with stage direction and management at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, started a dinner theatre company at the Jersey shore and directed its first production, helped create the first-ever super-titles for a New York City Opera season, did continuity for a “New Jersey Playhouse” film, developed and taught a job-seeking skills program for residents in a youth detention center. Finally settled down to teach high school English. Returned to the Northwest (Seattle) and my musical roots in 1986. Started a business and a family. Ran an outreach program for th...Expand for more
e Seattle Music Teacher’s Association (our first and biggest project was to raise $60,000 to buy the Seattle Symphony a new Steinway.) Discovered Mr. Right was Mr. Wrong; got divorced. Now I manage a large piano teaching studio and act as chair of the community outreach and education program for Washington State Music Teachers Assn. Stillplay chamber music in a trio and go to Ashland, Oregon every summer to pig-out on theater! So much for historical perspective. The best part of my life for the past 17 ½ years has been being a mommy. My daughter Emma is seventeen now and still seems to think I’m the funniest person she knows. I think she is VERY funny, too, and we spend a lot of the little bursts of time we spend together near hysterics. Emma is a tremendous athlete and a wonderful, albeit lazy, musician. She is the light of my life and is DEFINITELY the coolist person I know. She has been the bass player for the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band for the past three years and continues to win accolades for her work all over the country - most recently in NYC at the Essentially Ellinton competition where she won an award for best bass soloist and got a big hug from Wynton Marsalis who is even cooler than she is. LIFE IS GOOD. the little prompt bar tells me that you will want to know about my pets. yah....right. well i also have a dog and two cats!
