Susan's Story

I have lived in Montreal since 1979 and have 3 adult daughters two of whom live in Montreal and the other lives in Gananoque. I work in a hospital based EAP program as a marriage counsellor and I am a certified Imago therapist. I also do some mediation in the courts. My husband and I built our home (still needs lots of work) and have renovated 2 century old triplexs which is also an on-going process. It is great to see them return to their original beauty. Also love to travel - been to Scandinavia, all through Europe, china, Viet Nam, Hong Kong - try to go somewhere most years. For the last 5 years, I have taken up running (not quickly), working with a personal trainer and doing a personal work out 6 days/week. Unfortunately in June I tore the miniscus in my knee and this has proven to be a very slow and painful recovery - hopefully I will eventually be able to return to more of what I was doing. The biggest news is that I am now a Grandma - Ben is 22 months old and weighs in at a light 33 lbs. He looks a lot like my oldest daughter Laura. I feel like I get to revisit those days without having to stay too long. He is very sweet and gives me lots of joy. I have him every Sunday night and all day Mondays. We have just started swimming lessons and that has been a big hit. I have a wonderful little shitzu-Lasa mix named Milo who I love and adore and who loves and adores me! I have great friends who like me despite my faults. It is hard to know what to write to say what you have done for the last 40 years but overall it has been busy and gone by fast! Time really has sped by! I have been getting all these messages about reunions so I thought I should update my post. Ben is now almost 6 1/2 and we have had the wonderful addition of Anna who will turn 3 soon. Laura and her family have moved to Boston so we don't get to see them as much as we did but we try for every 6 weeks or so. That is not so difficult now that both my husband and I have retired. I retired at the end of 2016 (reluctantly) but the hospital closed my department so no choice. I am now volunteer counselling for a local non-profit and thoroughly enjoying it. Our youngest daughter just got married and now lives in Kingston. That leaves us with our middle daughter in Montreal and she has just bought her first home with her partner. It is a 1910 duplex that we are going to turn into a single family home. It is a place with "frightening potential" as they say. This project will probably take up most of my husband's "free time" for the next year. We continue to travel and I think the most memorable trip was a safari we did in Kenya - it was truly a once in a lifetime experience - 4 of us with a guide and lots of up close and personal experiences with lions; elephants, rhinos, snakes, crocodiles etc etc. Since I last commented on this profile, I have had back surgery which put me out of commission for about a year and just as I was almost back to normal I fell and broke my left wrist which I am still struggling with. I still have wonderful Milo and he keeps me sane. I/we are all turning 65 this year - sometimes I don't really feel any different than I did way back when and sometimes I feel every day of 65! Especially since my back surgery I am definitely on the "if you want...Expand for more
to do it - do it now " program. Happy Birthday class of 1971! I am certain when I was 19 I never thought about my 50th High School Anniversary - I wonder with Linked in, Classmates, com, google search etc if there would have been a reunion even if there had not been any COVID. The world is a far different place than when I last posted 4 years ago. Today is the Federal election and no matter who wins there will be more change as we continue to try and navigate our way through the on going pandemic and returning to some kind of "new reality". I am incredibly grateful to say that everyone I know has remained well and more or less coped with the lock downs; masks; travel restrictions etc. My low point was Feb - May 2021 when like many COVID fatigue set in and it was a struggle on many levels. We did not see our family from November until April which was really tough. One thing that helped me through it was we rediscovered our ping pong table and we played most nights and it was really fun. Thankfully we had our first shot in March and the second in June so life returned to some normalcy after that. There were lots of good things that have happened since I last posted. We welcomed Sebastien (now age 3) Henri (3) and Alice (1) and we are waiting for the arrival of a baby girl at the end of October. That will complete our grandchildren. Ben is almost 11 and Anna is 7 and they are growing like weeds. One of the hardest things is that we have lost time with these lovely babies and children. Alice is only now feeling comfortable with us and Ben is just on that verge of Hi Grandma - gotta go stage whereas before he was always happy to chat and spend time. My husband finally finished my daughter's house - it was supposed to take 1 year and took 4 but he did a beautiful job and with COVID he had nowhere else to be. I took up pickleball and love it - for long periods I played every day but I am greatly limited now as I have planters faciitis in my foot. I am still walking Milo and I play Bridge most days. I belong to a group on line and that has saved my sanity. There has been line dancing on line but I really need to see someone to follow so I am hoping for that to come back. I am finding the politics in Quebec more and more disturbing and often contemplate moving. I don't think moving gets any easier with age, but Chris is really not interested in leaving so I guess I will just have to wait and see. We do have one daughter and 2 grandchildren here so try to focus on the positive. I have periods when I think about where I would go if I could travel but I try not to do that anymore as it seems like it may be in reach and then it is not - so disappointing! We did have a period of going through all "our stuff" and got rid of and gave away lots and lots which felt very freeing. Hopefully we will have a second round - I would like to get rid of everything and start fresh but I probably don't have the energy to make all those decisions. I feel sad that so few people post anything about themselves - we spent some of the most formative years of our lives together and I remember many fondly and wonder how things worked out for them. I guess I will never know. Thank you for taking an interest in my life and stay safe! Happy 50th Anniversary!
