Sara's Story

Life livejournal ID: dairon920 / sarabwolfATgmailDOTcom Life...is wonderful. It is long, and strange, and frequently difficult. But I disagree with the paradigm I was raised with, that the world is the realm of evil or the devil. And with the Buddhists, that life is suffering. Life is a constant adventure, and the worst moments are the best times to learn. For those who have not seen me since 1996: I spent six years working and thinking, not really doing much else. I moved, made a few wonderful friends who are still very close, even though I've since moved again, this time to Appleton. I read a lot, everything I could: the little science I could understand, philosophy, psychology, and when I got to be brave enough to question the rigid strictures of my upbringing, even religion. They were right, the teachers that told us that theology changes one's way of looking at things. But I think that knowledge ultimately enriches us and makes us more fully human, and to doubt one's little god that punishes and strikes down for every microcosmic error is to come through to a greater understanding of the divine force which underlies all the transient manifestations that come and go in life. Churches, people and doctrines all included. The world is too big and too full of wonder and joy and hope and beauty to be ruled over by a demiurge that casts 95% of the population into eternal torture. The force that created this world is not a destroyer, and that is my last word on it. Well, there...now that the elephant in the parlor is taken care of, as they say, I can perhaps talk about other thing...Expand for more
s. After the working and thinking phase, I decided that I would like to return to school...I'd always wanted an opportunity to continue studying, I enjoyed at least that aspect of school a great deal. So I went to Lawrence University, where I have taken a religious studies major (ah, the irony of life is rich indeed) with emphases in Hinduism and Buddhism, and a Latin minor. (For those of you who remember the popularity the piece enjoyed in BSBS about 1995, I got to translate Carmina Burana in one of my classes, and it was a blast.) I had the opportunity to travel with my department a year and a half ago now, the summer of 2004, when I went to China and Tibet for a tour of some of the more popular monastaries there. If any of you are operating under the idea that all the great art in the world exists in the Western Hemisphere, you are so wrong...the art in even the smaller monastaries will completely blow you away, each one is as beautiful as the Sistene Chapel. Anyway...I will graduate this spring, in June of '06, after which I am planning to take a year or two off before going to grad school. Edit (1997): I did graduate last June, and am taking at least two years off before grad school. A great many personal issues have come up which require a meaningful level of attention, something which is nearly impossible to conjure up while working and taking several upper-level courses at the same time. Silence is good. Not worrying is better. Best of all is sleeping more than five hours in a night. *sigh* Even if it means a job I don't really enjoy for a while. There is time enough.
