Alexandra's Story

Life Alex pursued her interest in journalism for four years at The University of Texas at Austin, but after a string of Texas-based internships and philanthropy projects, decided she was cut out for public service. Coming to Austin marked an important turning point for this diva, who had to explain a jillion times how she came to Texas after spinning on the globe for 18 years. She made many friends, but few of the friendships stuck because the University was so large and Alex was pulled in so many interesting directions. The learning experience was unprecedented. Greengates prepared her for the writing and studying, but the University leant itself to wonderful cross disciplinary experiences. The house parties weren't too bad either. After graduating in 2002, Alex took her Texas portfolio to Phenix & Phenix Literary Publicists and the Governor's Office on Texas-Mexico Border Affairs where she used her Spanish to translate websites and diplomacy to end the stalemate over the water issue with Mexico. These opportunities led to the position of Press Secretary/Legislative Aide for a Texas State Senator, which brought her insight about conservative politics and the characters running the state. This was the highlight of her young career, and she enjoyed meeting all the other L.A.s It was like the sorority she had never joined, sorta kinda. Once again, fearing a glass ceiling, or reaching for some sort of cliche, Alex discovered she needed to reinvent herself once again, so she became a masters student at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT-Austin in 2003. he summer prep course, launched a shining moment in Alex's life. Her classmates were the well-rounded intellectuals she had always dreamed of, and constantly inspired to do more and learn more. Alex had a stint trying to save Connecticut from its greenhouse gas emissions in 2003, and realized she had a knack for conflict resolution in environmental policy and urban planning, so she decided to take courses outside her regular program in those areas. The last year was chock full of leadership and professional development, which meant that Alex needed to take two extra semesters to finish her work, but found in the end it was worth it. During these two years, Alex reaped the benefits of a small community within a large university, attending football games and participating in fun sports (intramural and field day) including soccer and softball, but found she was no good at "dizzy bat." Now Alex has landed in DC to commence her career with the federal government in transportation and environmental planning, with any luck. Alex went so far as to be named a finalist in the Presidential Management Fellows program, but is finding the process of finding a vacancy a bit of a sticky wicket. Since she has nothing but free time right now, she is taking the opportunity to track down old friends and classmates from her high schools, college, and graduate program. Please excuse the use of the third person. This is the way I was taught to write autobiographies for the Young Authors Festival at the American School of Madrid!!! I wish you all the best and hope to hear from you soon.
