Timothy's Story
Life
After H.S. I went straight into the Navy for six years. I spent the first two years in the service going to school, mostly in Pensacola, FL, for electronics and then was stationed on the USS MacDonough (DDG-39) in Charleston SC. While on that ship I made a North Atlantic and Med cruise and several trips to the Carribean.
When I was discharged from the Nave I spent a few months in Jacksonville, FL and then got a job with Sperry as an electronics instructor. This job involved teaching Saudi Arabian sailors hor to operate and maintain the system that I worked on in the service, so I lived in S.A. for almost two years.
When I returned to the U.S. I was assigned to the Clearwater, FL facility for the next three years. While there I worked on several Automated Test Stations. All the people I working with were degreed engineers except for me so I started going to school part time. After a year or so of that I quit my job and attended school full time in Minnesota where I got my AA at Normandale Community College.
I was involved with someone at that time and when things didn't work out I moved from Minneapolic, MN to Miami, FL which was quite a trip. I attended Florida International University in Miami and obtained my BSEE in Dec 1990. While looking for a job I came to Huntsville, AL for an interview with GE. While there I looked up some friends that I knew in Clearwater that had been transferred to Huntsville by the company (Unisys). They suggested that I submit my resume since I already knew most of the people from my previous employment with the company. I did and ended up coming back to work for the same company I...Expand for more
had quit three years earlier.
While I've been in Huntsville I continued going to school and received a Masters Degree in Computer Science from the University of Alabama.
About eleven years ago I met a women on the internet that I started e-mailing to and that led to long telephone calls. Around Christmas time I drove out to Dallas to meet her and ended up going out with her almost every night for the next ten days. Then we started commuting between Dallas and Huntsville every other weekend for a few months and by May she moved to Huntsville so we could be in the same city. The next weekend we "eloped" and got married.
My wife, Barbara, already had a son, Matt, from a previous marriage. On Feb 14, 1997, Valentine's Day, she told me that we were going to have a baby together. On October 2 our daughter, Sarah, was born. She has been involved in dance since she was almost 2 except for one year when she was a cheerleader. Sarah loves animals and we have had three dogs but don't have any at this time. We have a turtle that Matt has had for 12 or 13 years and Sarah has a pair of gerbils named Rascal and Golden.
I'm still working for the same company but it was acquired a few years ago by Lockheed Martin. I was promoted last year from a senior staff engineer to a program manager and now I'm responsible for several programs involving foriegn countries. It is very interesting and at times stressful but I'm still learning new things and growing which makes going to work interesting. I'm looking forward to retirement but it seems a long way off but I'm trying to prepare for that day now so I'll be ready when the time comes.
