Jackie's Story

Life Last name used at RHS: Kittrell Spouse/Significant Other: Cliff Honicker, married for 26 years, since July 4, 1981. Children: three sons, Myles, age 25, Nick, age 21, and Conrad, age 16. Life for the last 35 years: Jackie’s father was in the Navy and they lived in Newport twice: she attended Sheffield School in the 3rd grade, and Cranston-Calvert Elementary in the 4th grade, then moved away until 1970, when she attended RHS in the 11th and 12th grades. After graduation, she attended college in RI and Toronto, Ontario, before moving back to Tennessee where her parents had retired to Carthage. She volunteered to work on home-town boy, Al Gore, Jr.’s first run for Congress. (She worked on all his campaigns except for his final one.) She also worked in Nashville as a graphic artist and, among other things, designed Waylon Jennings’ stationary! (A leathered tooled guitar figured prominently.) She went to law school in 1979 at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She got married to Cliff between her second and third years, and was pregnant with her first son, Myles, during her third year. Her second son, Nick, was born in 1985 and when he was 2, she returned to finish up her course work and took the bar in 1989. In the meantime, she and Cliff worked at creating a nonprofit organization called American Environmental Health Studies Project, focusing on medical-legal policies affecting nuclear workers and veterans, as well as peop...Expand for more
le exposed to radiation in the environment. Knoxville is very close to Oak Ridge, TN, where the government has several nuclear weapons facilities, and she assisted unions and neighborhood associations with their health problems, as well as represented people who had been experimented on without their consent by the government. She has been in legal practice since 1989, and is currently Executive Director of a nonprofit community mediation center which mediates 1000 mediations each year using 50 volunteers. She likes to draw, paint, spin wool into yarn, knit, and read. She also tags along on canoe trips, spelunking, and hikes from time to time. She and her family live on a farm in Knox County, TN, in an old farmhouse/log cabin, "built in 1801, old for Tennessee." On the land, there are deer, fox, wild turkey, grouse, pheasant, quail and dove. They’ve recently made one field "grouse friendly." (They allow hunting of birds, but not larger animals.) They also have horses, cats, and dogs. Jackie believes they will be there forever, but she would love to keep coming back to Newport every summer for a gathering of friends. Since her last visit to Newport for the 35th reunion, she's making plans to come back every 6 months. Her favorite memories of RHS include skipping the pre-homeroom classes to go to breakfast at LaForge, going to games and dances at Rogers and DeLaSalle, watching the surf down by Cliff Walk and "eating lobster for $1/lb!"
