Charlotte's Story
In the 70's after finishing at Vandy in Nashville, I ended up in West Point, MS, on the staff of the town newspaper, the Daily Times Leader. My first task as features editor was to photograph a seven-foot tall okra plant. No joke. Still have the clipping to prove it. I thought being a journalist would be much more glamorous.
During my time there I moved over to the society desk for a time. I covered at least a thousand bridal showers, weddings, graduation parties. I tangled with the Coca-Cola company because the fad then was to have a "coke" party (you know, the green glass bottles with straws...)Each time I reported a "coke" party, I had to be sure to insert either the copyright symbol or TM, or be fined $100. ng it a "soda" party just didn't seem right.
What totally changed my mind about being a journalist was an assignment one early spring afternoon. I was told to drive out to the scene of a deadly head-on collision between two 18-wheelers on the main highway for a front page photo.
It was more horrifying than I can describe. One driver was trapped in the cab, engulfed in flames. I still remember the stench, and the helpless feeling of not being able to do anything to rescue him. I was under pressure to get the photo, but i just could not do it. I had to ask another onlooker to snap the picture. Shortly after that, I gave notice to my boss, and returned home to Memphis. My life took a totally different direction after that...
