Laura's Story

Updatte: 9/19/16: First, my husband is still in remission with his cancer. Looks like the cancer in his kidney has not spread to any more soft tissue. Throat is looking food. My oldest granddaughter has started her second year in collage and has also moved off campus and into her own apartment. My other granddaughter graduates HS in June of 2017. She is a bit wild, but very responsible. So have no clue what she will be doing after HS. My grandson has grown from this string bean into a very tall and muscular young man at 15. He is a star player on his football team. Has to be at least 6'4". I have to say that I miss having little ones in my life though. My Son, Kenneth who is now 52 (oh God) moved to Oregon and is now playing "Paul Bunion" in the wilds. Shares 10 acres with his significant other. They are raising CHICKENS among the many dogs and cats. He still works in the elevator industry and imagine will continue to do so until it is time to retire. My daughters are well and are happy. Life is good, well except for the fact that our country is going into the shitter. I will be going up North to spend the Holidays this year. I know, most people want to go South, but I miss them too much to stay away this year. Only problem is, I always get very ill when I go up North. So that makes it difficult. Update: 2/12/16: Received good news about husband's cancer. After going through 35 straight days, 15 min. per day of radiation and 4 round of chemo, doctors have said they see no more signs of this throat cancer. Our prayers were answered. I thought the treatment itself was going to kill him. After treatment was done, he developed pneumonia, then after that, a problem with his heart that needed immediate surgery. Still needs another surgery on his heart but he needs to get stronger for that. He finally was able to have his feeding tube removed this week and is eating regular sized meals again. It was a hard year for our family, as I have not shared everything. So happy that 2015 is over and hoping 2016 will be kinder to our family and to our country. Update: 6/30/15: What a year it has been. In September my son turned 50! As if I don't feel old enough! My son now lives is Oregon, in May my granddaughter Taylor turned Sweet 16 and what a party it was. In June, my oldest granddaughter Devyn graduated HS with high honors and will be off to college in August. My grandson, Jaiden also graduated, grammar school. He has a great future in sports. Unfortunately, while up North for all of the festivities, my husband was diagnosed with cancer. Both in the kidney and in the throat. So, he had one of his kidnesy removed immediately and is now getting radiation and chemo for this throat. At the age of 70 it is kicking his ass. I pray constantly that he will beat this. For anyone who reads this, please offer a prayer for him. Had to return to Florida for a few weeks to take care of some personal business and then it is back up north to help my husband while in treatment. The throat is very difficult, as the treatment makes it almost impossible to swallow food or liquids. One of these days I have to update my pic, I know. Not too much change though. A little sagging jowls otherwise pretty much the same. Still have no grey hair! The older I get, it seems the darker my hair gets. No, I do not dye my hair. Don't have the patience to deal with roots and crap. Oh, and boy am I shrinking! In the past 7 yrs. I have gone from being 5'9" to being 5'4-1/2". I used to be called a long drink of water, but now I seem to be a short shot. hahaha. I also got certified for concealed carry for my weapon. Proud of that, surprised too. I never thought I would be such a good shot. I spend most of my time keeping up with what is going on in our country politcally as well as what is going on abroad. I am addicted to the game backgammon and play regularly on the internet. Also caught up on my Steven King collection of books. I have run across him a few times in Sarasota, but have never had the nerve to intrude on his privacy to ask him to sign one of my books. I have every book he has written. Well, I guess that is about it for now. Update" 5/8/13: Well my unfortunate health problems continue. Because of the long hospital stay last year and my illnesses during the Christmas Holidays, my immune system has been destroyed. Have had to go through a few "procedures" to help restore it. Now it is up to God. On the good , my grandson has a great talent for baseball. Since he was two years of age, I have been telling my family that this child had a great arm and eye and this year he is coming into his own. He is ...Expand for more
12 now. This season, he hit his first "out of the park" home run and last week, he pitched a "9 strike out game". He is the youngest on his team. I am so proud of him. He is also a straight A student unlike his Grandmother. LOL. I am looking forward to all three of my grandchildren coming down in July. My son, who will turn 49 in September, finally has found the love of his life and may be moving to Oregon in the near future. They are still trying to figure out who should move. My son lives in New Jersey and she in Oregon. Of course I am hoping that it will be she who moves to the east coast, but who knows. Just happy that he has found someone he wants to grow old with. Hoping to see many of my old friends at the reunion next year, God Willing. Update: 2/6/13 Well what I year it has been. I had back surgery, got dropped after surgery which was the cause of another surgery. Coded twice before they could get me into the operating room again. Quite a scarry experience. Went up North for the holidays and my oldest granddaughter's Sweet 16 party. What a beautiful young woman she is growing to be and so smart. My grandson, who is 12 is a terrific dancer, although very shy about it. He is already havving to fight the girls off. He is quite handsome as well as being very smart. My youngest granddaughter Taylor (14) is the one who will give her Mom a run for her money. Very out spoken!. Unfortunately got very sick while there (chest and sinus infections) and did not get the time with my family I was hoping for. Back in Florida, got sick again, wound up in hospital. NOT A GOOD YEAR. But I thank God every day for the good fortune of my family. I am on the mend and looking forwarrd to my family coming down this summer, especially my grand children. I just love being around them. Am looking forward to the reunion next year. Missed the last one because of my back problem that had put me in a wheel chair. But I am up and walking again and even dancing again. Life does has it's sweet moments. Update: 2/20/09 Well, I have finally did what I have been longing to due for many years. I got my first tattoo, a present from my daughter. It is on the back of my neck. Two cobra snakes entwined and kissing. I love it. All of my children inherited my liking for body art. Eash have at least six or seven. So my daughter got tired of my lame excuses and had a tattoo artist come to her home and she gave me no choice. Hurt like hell(and that is a small one). However, I am already thinking about getting my second tattoo. My daughter Jen went to have one of her rose tattoos touched up because it faded over the years. Now she has a garden of flowers going across her back. The art work is gorgeous! How she stood it for 5 hrs. straight I don't know. Mine took about an hour and I thought I was going quit, but I hung in there. My youngest daughter had one done also. A fairy mother holding up her baby fairy and they are surrounded by butterflies, starts, flowers etc. All this in an overl of muted smokey mauves in a large oval on her side. Another 5-6 hour session. Any artist here on board that can come up with a nice design for a bracelt type of tattoo for my wrist. Nothing gothic, flowers, leaves things of that nature. If so let me see them. I am so happy my daughter helped me stop making excuses. That is it for now. Life I lived in the heights,Leonard St. to be exact. I am hoping to talk to as many people from 61-65 or from my old neighborhood in the hight section as possible. Went to the '05 reunion, but there were so many I did not get to chat with or who did not come. I hope those who missed the last reunion wil go to the one in '09. Don't put it off till the next one because, well you know...... I am a mother of 3, 1 son, two daughters. of whom I am very proud of. I now have three grandchildren, 2 girls and 1 boy. Their ages are 12, 9 and 8. They are the loves of my life and they never cease to amaze me. I lived up on the top of a mountain in Pennsylvania, Mt. Pocono Area. Lived there for 15 yrs. Before moving toPA I resided in Rutherford, NJ. Had a house on Orient Way. I just recently moved to Bradenton, FL (next to Sarasota) on the Gulf, as of 8/1/08. I am presently retired and find I have a lot of time on my hands. Now that I am in Florida I fill up that time at the beach and baking deserts. I make my own ice cream as well as Italian ices. Also trying to get my brain to understand that the body can't quit keep up with what my brain wants it to do. You know, my soul says I am 30 but the body is screaming 61!!! It is good to catch up with old friends, so give me a yell.......Laura Grosskopf Ayala
