Bryan's Story

Life Bryan Black is the co-founding member of MOTOR (novamute) and XLOVER (Gigolo Records). Bryan Black grew up in the city of Minneapolis. After seeing the film 'Purple Rain', bryan decided his future was in music. He frequently performed at the famous First Avenue nightclub in Minneapolis with his first band, haloblack. Prince became one of his fans, and invited Bryan to come and work for him at Paisley Park Studios after one of haloblack's live performances. Bryan worked with Prince as a sound designer, and keyboard technition in the late 1990's. While working at Paisley Park Studios, Bryan recorded a record as haloblack, called 'Funkyhell'. Despite being released on a small independent label (Caroline), the record found itself in the top 10 in Rolling Stone's alternative charts, and Alternative Press magazine branded it as 'One of the 10 Best Industrial Rock Albums' (of all time). haloblack supported Marilyn Manson in Minneapolis the same year, before Bryan burned out and decided to move to London and start completely all over again. In London bryan founded a new project, XLOVER with his new partner in crime, Mr. No. XLOVER were signed to City Rockers after completing only 1 song, 'Trash Me'. The sound was similar in style to Prince from the early 80's. The production was tough and minimal. While recording t...Expand for more
heir first record, XLOVER remixed Blondie, Gwen Stefani, New Order and others. Also at this time, XLOVER started working with Felix Da Housecat on his new album, 'Devin Dazzle and The Neon Fever'. Felix and Bryan found a shared interest in the early sounds of Prince mixed with the modern production techniques available today. After finishing work on the Felix record, Felix returned the favor, and worked on the XLOVER record, and together they found time to write music for Princess Superstar in between songs. Other songs were sent to Japanese goth rocker, Atsushi Sakurai, which he later released on his solo album 'Ai No Wakusei' (JVC Japan). During the recording sessions for XLOVER, bryan and Mr. No, decided to try and make a techno record, as an experiment. They put the name 'MOTOR' on a 3-song demo sent it un-solicited to Novamute/Mute records. MOTOR were quickly signed to Novamute/Mute Records. The first MOTOR singles 'Sweatbox' and 'Stuka Stunt', quickly catapulted MOTOR into the techno spotlight. During the recording of their album, MOTOR remixed Throbbing Gristle, Marilyn Manson, and most recently, Depeche Mode. MOTOR have just released their debut album, 'Klunk' and are on a World tour with a live show that is a no holds barred full on the floor mayhem extravaganza. in 2006, bryan will perform on all 7 continents.
