Linda's Story

Life After graduating from Woodbury High School, I went on to get a BA in biology from Gettysburg College. I was employed by the NJ State Police as a Forensic Scientist for 34 years (long before forensic science was cool!), eventually becoming the Lab Director of the DNA lab. Got an M.S. in biology from Rutgers. The writers of CSI consulted with me before the first show was aired. (little did I realize it would become the most popular show on TV!) Since retiring from the State Police in 2006, I have been consulting. I am currently contracting with the federal government, to help police departments and forensic laboratories in developing countries worldwide. I have previously worked with the Forensic Center in Kyiv, Ukraine. Although Ukraine is not a "developing" country, exactly, since its independence from USSR in 1993, it struggles to rebuild a democracy with a capitalist economy. I love the people in Ukraine and have made several great friends. I also worked in Armenia. I have been working with 2 forensics labs in the Republic of Georgia since 2008. I work there for 6 weeks and then return home for 4-6 weeks. I am helping them prepare for accreditation. One of the labs was accredited in 2012 and the other should achieve accreditation this year (in April 2019). Roy has visited me there a few times. A really gorgeous country and great people. Last summer I brought a contingent of Georgians to the US to visit some accredited laboratories here. I have been skiing there at three different ski slopes.. The Caucasus mountain range is higher than the Alps. I've been married for 47 years to my college sweetheart, Roy Jankowski (yes, my name is Linda Jankowski). No children (by choice). Roy has had many adventurous jobs, a Sheriff in a wild west show, building 65 foot and 85 foot steel tall ships, (which he sailed to the keys), commer...Expand for more
cial lobsterman, and lumberjack on a dangerous tree crew. Mostly he was a builder and is now retired. We enjoy fishing, and spent an entire week on a boat in Panama right after the war--actually walked in the beach in front of Noriega's house. We also like dog sledding (mushing), skiing, walking on the beach in Brigantine, walking in the woods at Batso, and tooling around the countryside in our Ford Thunderbird. Twice we have mushed for a full week, sleeping in tents at temperatures of -12F. We live in a beautiful area in the pine barrens on 12 acres of land. After retiring, I started raising orchids, and, of course, am now totally out of control. We need a greenhouse, but put that on hold after the stock market tanked in 2008 :(. Update--Greenhouse is back on track--so far it has survived 3 blizzards, one wicked noreaster, hail, and an earthquake! Now we are heavily into vegetable gardening and canning. I swear I am turning into my grandmother. 2020 has been a challenging year. First I had knee replacement surgery in January. The Pandemic has wreaked havoc on the world. I was speaking at an International Women in Policing conference overseas in the country of Georgia when Trump announced he was closing the border to Europe within 2 days. I had to scramble to get rebooked going from Tbilisi (Georgia) to Doha (Qatar) and then a 14 hour flight to Philadelphia. This all hobbling around with a cane due to the knee. Many of you remember my Mom, Kathryn Black, 5th grade teacher at West End School. She passed away this past summer at the age of 92. I thank Larry Smith and wife Susan (Snyder) for arranging recent reunions, some at their beautifully renovated traditional house in Wenonah. Reunited with alot of old friends there. Have hooked up to some old friends through classmates too.--it's fun, and brings back lots of memories.
