Paul's Story
Life
My family returned to the states in July 1964. Dad was stationed at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, and Steve and I attended and graduated from Leavenworth High School.
In 1968, Dad was sent over to Korea for a year and Mom moved to Lawrence, Kansas, where Steve and I attended Kansas University. Steve and I both received our commissions in the Army at KU and served after graduation - Steve went into the regular Army for about 27 years; I served 8 years in the reserves. We both avoided going to Vietnam. I received a BFA in Design (Advertising and Editorial Art), while Steve received his degree in Civil Engineering.
Steve and I both married our lovely wives right out of college and are celebrating 36 and 34 years, respectively. Steve and Kathy have two children (one of each) and one grandchild, while Karen and I have three daughters, but no grandchildren. Steve is now retired from the Arm...Expand for more
y and flies a helicopter for an AirMed service in Augusta, GA. Kathy is studying to be a doctor's assistant. I was laid off in February from my job here in Liberty, MO, working 14 years for a large magazine printer. My entire career was in the printing industry, mostly magazine printing (pricing and customer service management). Karen is a nurse educator at Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, MO.
When Dad returned from Korea, he and Mom continued to live in Lawrence for almost 30 years. In 1997, Mom's balance began to deteriorate, so we moved them both here to Liberty where they lived in a one-story apartment until about 4 years ago when we all moved into the same house together so that Karen and I could care for them. Soon after, Mom was diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimers and began declining further. She passed away in June. We continue to care for Dad who is also declining.
