Allan's Story
Life
In '61 I moved to CA, went to school for three months, learned that high school was not the most enjoyable time of my life, and then joined the Navy on my 17th birthday. After my tour, I was hired at Memorex Corporation as a mail clerk, then a truck driver, then a shipping foreman, married for the 1st time, and began attending school (West Valley Jr. College), from which I was graduated w/ AA in German. My daughter, Ilona, was born that year, also. Realizing that I would not advance further without higher education, I matriculated in San Jose State University, majored in German and won a scholarship to Rulprecht Universitaet, Heidelberg, Germany where I completed my BA in German and English, receiving it from San Jose State. Upon returning, I entered graduate school and received my teaching certificate, which led to my being hired to teach German and English at Arcata High in Humboldt Co., CA where I taught from 1970 through 1982. From 1982 - 2004, I taught at McKinleyville High School. In 1976, I received an MA in the...Expand for more
applied study of grammar at the secondary teaching level, wrote some articles, went on speaking tours, continued to teach, divorced in the 70s, remarried in '81 to a living saint, then Laura Schuette, and in 1982, I transferred to another high school in the district where I taught German, English, Literature in Film, AP English, wrote grants, and performed staff development duties. In 1988, I was one of 23 teachers nationwide to win a fellowship to teach within the German system for a year. That entire year was like an extended honeymoon, although Laurie and I had travelled extensively prior to '88. I retired in 2004, was appointed to the county grand jury for two years, one of which I was foreman, and learned how brilliant our forefathers were in setting up citizen oversight groups vested with legal authority . Fascinating. Currently, I fish, build little projects, write, and enjoy retirement and my wife and two lovely children, Elizabeth and Jonathan, who still live at home. Much more has happened, but this is a glimpse.
