Melanie's Story

Life I retired from the US Army in 1998 as a Master Sergeant. I spent the first year just enjoying the numerous opportunities to volunteer. My computer skills kept me busy as a volunteer at First Baptist Church. I also began volunteering at our local community theatre, The Impromptu Players, Inc. Initially, I acted in a play, but then I learned the thrill of working backstage, working in the technical booth with the sound, lights, and filming. I assisted a wonderful lady, Dr. Cindy Treme, in the production of week long theatre camps for children. (Learned alot about costuming in this capacity.) We did two camps a summer and each camp ended with a musical production starring the children. After two years, work obligations kept Dr. Treme from being active in the children's camps, so I (with my limited knowledge) took over. We now do three camps a summer and the Regional Louisiana Arts Council supports us with grant money. There are usually 30-40 children in each production and it is the most fulfilling thing that I have ever done except for parenting. I am hoping to begin a Christian teaching ministry soon. I have already named it "Jacob's Ministries" in honor of the child that I lost in 2000. Erin is currently in the Navy stationed in Oxynard, CA. She is the editor of the base newspaper. She has been fortunate in that position to work with the actors from the series JAG and 24, both of which film some scenes on her base. She has covered at least three International Triathlon. She was chosen to be part of the newsgroup handling the burial of President Ronald Reagen. She was in to Rotundra Room where his coffin lay on display. Now she is ready to come home and finish her degree in Elementary Education and teach children. Christopher was hoping for a world tour, but had to settle for an extended stay (18 months) in Baghdad. ke Charles, Alexandria, and so on. Their billeting and work area were inside a guarded perimeter. Unfortuately, Chris volunteered for the Quick Reaction Force and managed to spend the majority of his time outside of this protected perimeter. He had personally applied the additional fortification to his Humvee. He modified his individual weapon so that it could launch hand granades. His convoy did take fire several times, but they were never injured. Chris was amazed that many of his "runs" lead him right next to the Tigris River. He couldn't believe that he was actually in the Fertile Cresent where God began life on earth. Chris's most fulfilling moment was his ability to be part of the armed presence that was in place in Baghdad during their first democratic elections -- elections that allowed even women to vote. I am proud of my two service members. Matthew is still at home. Gary and I are home schooling him utilizing the curriculum from the Home Education Course provided by the accredited Keystone National High School out of Pennsylvania. Since we homeschool throughout the year with breaks of a week or two at different times, Matthew has a very lite schedule. He was really excited about it until I introduced Basic Latin, Traditional Logic, Basic Biblical Greek and Hebrew. Of course, he does not take these all at once and these are not accredited courses, but it is an opportunity to learn. We even take some Fridays to watch some of the classics of old (e.g. Singing in the Rain, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, South Pacific, etc.). We also play the old board games like Clue, Concentration, even Mouse Trap. Unfortunately, I have to reciprocate by trying my hand at the new video games. I usually get "seasick" because of the 3D element, and then I fall down and I can't get up. But, we have fun. Gary is still teaching at the local high school. He is a rare combination: his students love him and they actually learn. Heck, even the parents love him!!
