Cindy's Story

Life Who knew that the love of my life was right under my nose, walking the same hallways to classes, & possibly passing by one another everyday for 3 years? Volker Schaefer & I met on our senior trip in the Poconos. We were married in 1967, We have a daughter & a terrific son-in-law, the parents of our one & only grandson. We also have a son & a lovely daughter-in-law who blessed us with a beautiful granddaughter in October 2012! Our daughter & son are almost 10 years apart. We had a 2nd daughter two years after our firstborn who passed away at age 3. We will be celebrating our 48th year of marriage August 26th. I went to work right out of high school as a secretary at an insurance company & later secretary at NJ Bell. Quit to raise a family. After we moved to WA I volunteered in the school district with a short time off when our son was born. Continued volunteer work, PTA, etc. and later became an elementary school secretary until Volker's job took us to Michigan. Worked for the school district there for a couple of years until we bought a small ranch, 2 horses, goats, chickens, etc. The 6 years we spent in MI are what I refer to as our "fairytale years" because we both loved animals (especially horses) & farming. (I know, who knew!) It was a great place to live, raise our son & enjoy many friends & neighbors who shared our interests. In 1995 we moved back to WA state & the beautiful mountains & evergreen landscape we loved & missed (Volker's job). We live on 5 acres in the quiet setting of Eatonville. Mt. Rainier is in our backyard (actually our frontyard). We spend time now enjoying life. We've traveled to Germany, Italy, Switzerland, England, Wales & Aruba & been to many U.S. states and points of interest. We went to England in July (2004) to visit friends we met a few years ago in Vancouver, B.C. t...Expand for more
hrough a chess club we belong to - what a beautiful country! (both England & Canada - especially B.C.) Our English friends came here & spent two wonderful weeks with us here in WA & we've been back to do some touring through England & a bit more of Italy with them. In August (2005) we drove cross-country to NJ for a family reunion & spent almost a month visiting friends & family scattered all over the eastern seaboard from NJ to Maine, drove onward to Michigan for another reunion with friends there. A couple of years ago Volker bought a 1960 Triumph TR3A. We joined a Triumph club and have done some touring and made many new friends and acquaintances. In June, 2014 we toured many states in this great country of ours; put on over 9,400 miles which took us six weeks. It was a great experience and wherever we went, people were friendly and outgoing. And guess what? .... Volker and I are still speaking to one another (ha-ha, tee-hee). That was one of the questions our friends asked: "how can you spend so much time together - didn't you run out of things to talk about?" We're just lucky I guess. We were able to visit with many friends and family in NJ, NH, MO, and IO. We wanted to do this trip because I was scheduled for knee replacement surgery in September. The surgery went well - it's been three months and I am so glad I had it done. I have no limitations from my previous activities. We enjoy traveling, gardening, hiking/walking, (we love the outdoors) reading, chess, spoiling our grandchildren, & each other. Life has been good, not always easy; sometimes miserable, never a dull moment & worth every minute. We'd love to hear from anyone who has a notion to say hello & hear all about how & what you've been doing for the past 50 years (can you believe it!?) Does anyone from classes 62 - 64 live out west?
