More about Helen:"I was born in Niagara Falls, New York, and grew up on Grand Island. My sisters, Lilith and Emily, went to private high schools. Lilith went to Westtown, a Quaker boarding school outside Philadelphia, and Emily went to Park School in Buffalo. I was left to fend for myself in the Grand Island Schools. My senior year, a private boys school in Niagara Falls opened its doors and accepted women students. DeVeaux School had been a Military Boys Academy when my mother was growing up. I found the experience to be rewarding. I went from being a C student in public school, to being an A student at the private school. In fact, my graduating class had 64 students, and I was in the top 10th percentile. I came to Indiana and went to Franklin College, and once again I became a C student. Half way through my sophmore year, I declared my major in Business Administration, and with the general education classes I had completed, I found I could complete my studies in another year and a half including 2 summer school sessions. Upon graduation, I accepted a position with Engineered Models Corpo...Expand for more
ration, a company that made aerospace parts for the government, and Detroit Diesel Allison. I learned more about how a business was run, or should not be rung while working there, and it had nothing to do with the text books! I spent succeeding years working in different offices and not for profit agencies. In 1989 I felt the need to learn more about computers to upgrade my skills in the industry. I went to Ivy Tech, half of my needed credits transferred from Franklin, and I was set to go. I had gotten married and divorced, I had a full time job, and I was raising a 6 year old. It took me 4 years of going to school parttime, and I did it! I graduated with high honors, and I was a charter member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society for two year degrees. I worked for the public school system in the Administrative offices, and learned Education and Politics operate in a similar manner. I was offered a position with the State of Indiana, as an underhire programmer. I thought I would be able to strengthen my programming skills, I was wrong about that. The state let me go because my services were no longer needed, and I fought them on it. I did not win that arguement either. We had a new governor, which generated a new administrative line, power shifted, and they wanted my space and salary to bring someone in who did programming for the Enterprise system. I lost out all the way around. I volunteer with an animal shelter, and I foster 4 cats at this time. Three of them will never be adopted because of their temperment, they are all very sweet kitties though.".
