NANCY (KUHRMANN)'s Story

It's prom season and we were gabbing how things have changed over the years. For the life of me, I can't remember what we did after either prom - parties? dinner? Don't know. What I am curious about is how will people remember HS and the memories we created. There have been too many years since graduation, and most of us have moved forward to destinations we never dreamed of. The rush of adult life kept us too busy. I always thought we'd have time later to reminisce when we retired. Now that we finally reached the age, time is flying by and we don't have time or can't remember what we worked so hard for. Crazy life, but it is what it is. March 2024 - Getting ready for another BD. They fly by now. We've been watching some of the NCAA games and remembering the basketball games we used to go to in school. Those games were more fun because they were personal. We went to school with the players, and in some cases even knew their families. I went to both my proms with guys on the basketball team - Bob Curl took me to my junior prom, and Paul Insigna to my senior prom. My BFF Jerry Schenk lived next door to the Curl family so were friendly throughout high school. I remember going on at least one road game but don't know how we got there. Still, they were good times. I wish there were some prom pics that people would be willing to share. Jan 2024 - I joined this website hoping that someone out there would make contact and had some stories to tell or pictures from back then but that hasn't happened the way I had hoped it would. I found one picture from our Senior Prom that brought back memories - but that was on another website. I got the chance to speak with Bob Curl (class of '65) on the phone and that was pretty cool. All-in-all I wish you all the best. Stay safe and be well. Nancy JAN 2023 - I thought I'd try this for another year. Still hoping to see if anyone out there remembers me or some of the things we did back then. Originally I wanted to reach out to some folks and remember crazy fun times we had. Maybe bring back some old memories and find someone with pictures to share. My memory isn’t what it once was and it was all a long time ago. Of course, not everybody remembers things the same way; people we hung out with, things we did. Larry Barry was kind enough to help rekindle the story about a group of us headed to Buddy Dean and ending up at Memorial Stadium. My BFF Jerry and I met up with Pat Ewing and Ursula Ulbinsky on the bus and Larry was there with another guy - can't remember his name. As we passed the stadium we saw that the O's were playing a home game so we switched plans. Great memory. I’m trying to remember people I knew from Teen Center – Jerry and I used to go there Saturday nights. Her dad used to take us to see Navy play football. That was back in the day when girls had to wear dresses or skirts to sporting events. Funny how after George and I married, we bought a house and raised our daughters one street over from where I used to hang out w...Expand for more
ith Jerry, and Bob and Dennis. Lots of memories in this old neighborhood. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 58 years since we graduated. And for 48 years of that time period we've lived in this house. Time has flown by as if in a dream. Or maybe it was high school that was a dream and reality is now. Stay well and be safe. Written 2022: Who was it said, “Youth is wasted on the young?” We had it made back then – hanging out, flirting, having fun with friends. Great fun; wonderful friends. Life was good. The only real responsibility we had was cleaning our rooms, getting class assignments in on time, and meeting our curfew. But we could hardly wait to graduate and be free of the rules and regulations of the system. To be on our own and become “adults.” After graduation it all changed. We became the adults we wanted to be, only life wasn’t exactly the way we thought. We married, had kids and watched them grow, until they married and had kids of their own. We found the joy of love, the pain of loss, and somehow weathered the storms that life gave us. And here we are today. It’s been a wild and crazy ride. Some of the memories have faded a bit, but sometimes a little spark brings back a thought or two, and in my heart I know those memories were real once upon a time. C’est la vie. Love to all, hope you are well, and please stay safe. Update to say a little more about how we got to where we are. Funny how time has a way of making things that happened years ago so vivid, yet it’s hard to remember yesterday. Thinking back on the years after graduation and how life changed for everybody. George and I married in Sept of ‘66, but the courtship began in homeroom in ’61, and continued off and on for 4 years - mostly off, because he joined the military in March of ’62 and we both knew he’d be far away and the war in ‘Nam was gearing up and anything could happen. Plus, he knew there would be events in my life that he couldn’t be here for – but we wrote to each other and he would contact me every time he got into town so we stayed in touch. George was thinking about making the military a career, but instead flew home for New Year’s Eve in ’65 to propose. We did all the usual stuff newlyweds do; got an apartment, had a baby in April of ’68, moved to our first house about a year later and got pregnant again while we both worked at the agency. My dad died of cancer in June of ’71 and our second daughter was born 3 months later on Labor Day. Mom got sick in late September so she came to live with us and I stayed home to take care of both our daughters and my mom while George worked extra jobs. Mom died of cancer in May of ’72, eleven months after dad. Life was difficult for a while, but many people had it worse than us so we felt blessed because we still had each other. And we realized how important family really is. I’m sure everyone has their own story, some better, some worse, but this is the path we walked that brought us here. All I can say is life has been good to us.
