Steven's Story

I was born in Philadelphia, PA and am from Devon, Pennsylvania. I attended Strafford Elementary School, Valley Forge Junior High School and Conestoga Senior High School. I live here in Volcano, Hawaii. Some may know that I played 5-string banjo when at Conestoga. Last time I was in Pennsylvania was 1989. College and Sports: I attended the University of Pennsylvania (freshman and sophomore years) and rowed intercollegiate (2nd place in the EARC Sprint Rowing Championships). I also raced under U.S. Cycling Federation license in bicycle racing on the velodrome and in criterium races. I completed my BS in Earth Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University-College of Earth and Mineral Sciences. I later attended graduate school at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana and worked as a teaching assistant in the Geosciences Department. I also earned a certificate in Residential and Commercial Carpentry from Fort Myers Vocational/Technical College in Fort Myers, Florida. Eventually I went back to college part time after moving to West Sacramento, CA. I obtained an A.S. in Biology, and an A.A. in Kinesiology (exercise science) at Sacramento City College followed by an A.S. in Horticulture at American River College. Military: I spent four years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, finishing my enlistment as a noncommissioned officer (NCO in navigation/signaling [QM/SM]-finished as pay grade E-5) with two years reserve time, after which I received my honorable discharge certificate. During my time with the Coast Guard, I served aboard an Arctic Icebreaker in Greenland and the Northwest Passage. I also served aboard a search and rescue/maritime law enforcement unit out of Coos Bay, Oregon and was a memb...Expand for more
er of armed boarding parties to search/seize vessels carrying contraband and enforcement for commercial fisheries patrols. We also dealt with many rescues at sea including vessels sinking, serious onboard accidents on vessels and even an airplane crash at sea. Additionally, I served aboard an inland construction tender based out of Portland, Oregon. The inland construction tender repaired, maintained and replaced Aids to Navigation on the Columbia, Willamette and Snake Rivers from Rainier, Oregon all the way up to Lewiston, Idaho. I also did a tour of duty with the Louisiana Army National Guard, based out of Lafayette, Louisiana. Working career: My working career was initially varied but I worked as a cargo handler running heavy equipment and container loaders moving container freight in Philadelphia as my first job out of college. I worked 16 hours per day (double shift) 6 days per week as I had to pay off all those college student loans--LOL. Ultimately I obtained a position with the Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers, NY District as an area manager in maritime construction permitting along with "dredge and fill" permitting. This led to a career in environmental regulatory work and 8 years of project management in cleaning up of contaminated sites. I finished my career with the CalEPA in Sacramento, CA. Currently I am retired. I live on Hawaii Island literally about 400 feet from the boundary of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with my partner of 25 years on 3 acres of rainforest land. We own and operate a short term vacation rental onsite in the rainforest/cloud forest in the mountains of Hawaii Island at 3800 feet MSL, windward side for those that prefer a partially off-grid eco-type of vacation.
